Hi,
Ive been freelancing for a year now and Ive been charging different rates for the same things based on peoples income etc. Only now am I attempting to charge people what I think I actually deserve. Yesterday I had a bloke ring up and ask me to do a logo and ID package (letterheads, business cards etc.). He says to me it should take you about five hours, how much do you want? I have this problem with all my clients, they think a weeks work is going to take me 5 hours and are shocked by what I quote them. I realise everyone on here is based in different parts of the world but I thought id ask, how much would you guys charge for this package? Just to get an overall picture of the global going rates.Any advice would be a massive help,
Thanks a million,Evin

£5000 minimum.

but then, i'm quite cheap and not very good at it.

hehe sounds like he consulted Kinko's first...
YOU need to determine how many hours it will take you to complete each component of the package and come up with an esitmate based on that... and be clear about how many rounds of changes your estimate includes
it really depends on if he wants something quick or if he wants something great

barb that last part sounded really sexual!!

my guess is he just wants something cheap... when he tells you how much he wants to spend, tell him how many hours that gets him, and once you pass that 5-hour mark, he's on his on :D

I've been charging £17-£25 an hour. Northwest of England.
Break it down to them what you have to do within that week : research, rough ideas, revisions, progression of chosen designs, final artwork.

Well this for a big music conference and he wants something really good, which I can provide in a minimum of a week. If anyone can give me a ballpark figure it would be great. Like I dont want to put out anything that is going to make me look bad, so I usually take my time and then undercharge people but im fed up with doing that

A big music conference? Fuck it, they got money, if they got money you up the ante. X4

"If anyone can give me a ballpark figure it would be great."
break it down, like bullitt and i are telling you:
estimate the total hours and multiply it by your rate... simple!
- Bullitt0
Is he expecting you to also sort out all the printing/costs?

(Aug 14 07, 06:11)i wasn't referring to his rate [which seems low], but to his advice:
"Break it down to them what you have to do within that week : research, rough ideas, revisions, progression of chosen designs, final artwork."

bullitt x barbtastic = x2

Right seems like a good idea, ill go for the meeting, suss out how much money is willing to be spent etc, then come back to them with a schedule.
I just find 90%of people thing design is practically free and it wrecks my head. People don't want to pay for design...rather than lose the job I usually end up undercharging....
Would you guys take a week for a logo though? Does that seem reasonable time wise?
- barbtastic0
evin... maybe yr so used to selling yrself short, you don't know what your rate should be?
here in usonia, i'd charge
~ $100/hr for concept worki know ppl that charge less or more, depending on how much experience/talent invloved

5 hrs...!!!
Less than a day, come on. Tell him it takes a little longer than that to do research concepts, amends and artwork plus that design bit in the middle... I would start with 2 days and roll from there constantly keeping him in the picture of your total days/hours

i'd do a "quick" logo in a week, but the second i read ID package, you made me nervous...
is this going to live on past the date of the conference?
i'd need a week just for the initial rough ideas, then maybe another week [or two? you never know with clients] to work out a final logo and apply it to the ID system
