does anyone have any experience printing large format, say 10 ft x 8 ft?
what is the minimum dpi i can get away with and still produce a decent image? 150? 72?

depends how far away the viewer will be?

pretty far, will be placed around a soccer pitch.

I've done a few this year.
I tend to do them a third of the actual size. Of course with vector there's no problem doing them this way. Regarding the images I use I set them to 200 dpi, although my boss insists we do 150dpi.
The last I did was 7x3 feet. Set the doc to be a third of the final size with the BG (tiff) set to 200 dpi and the rest were vectors.
It came out really good. It was printed on water resistant vinyl or some shit like that. They were used at some local music festival.

and oh yeah....check with whoever will be printing it. Shit varies from printer to printer.

ribit's got the right idea.
I would be interested if anyone has guides on distance v. dpi.

100 to 150 is preferred but 72 is acceptable, in general...
depends a lot on image type as well, images that are more textured are more forgiving, but if you're doing something quite flat/even/graphic and with type you'll want to make sure that is at least 150...
if you're ever doing anything lenticular, even large format, that needs to be 300 dpi...
