interesting concept. thanks.

And it doesn't have any significant effect on most LCDs, which makes it somewhat redundant.
Most LCDs work by covering an already backlit display with darkened liquid crystals, which means in fact, that you use MORE electricity showing black.
There is a new type of LCD emerging which works by only lighting areas, but I can't remember what they're called.

hmmmm... saving energy by turning off RGB colors...
- Mimio0
Completely stupid.
- version30
my true life screen is as black as it is off if an rgb black is used as the background.
i'm not saying it saves any energy, but it doesn't seem to be illuminating anything

Sensational piece of marketing & PR...
It’s not Google at all, it’s a bunch called Heap Media in Australia who are using Google custom search (their off the shelf affiliate search product) to make a page that looks like Google but is black. They hook into the tree hugger mindset and bang you have a website that serves millions of uniques per month – brilliant!

Blackle is found on the shelves of home improvement stores that cater exclusively to the emo set.

I like how there are articles already being suspicious of this concept.
*hugs world

'Dr. Heap and his company, Heap Media, also stand to benefit from traffic to the site (assuming it comes back online). Blackle is part of the Google Co-op program, which means it shares in ad revenue from searches. A Google spokesman said, “Google is not affiliated with Blackle and we do not have any additional comments to provide at this time.” '

It seems to me that contemporary ethics have been compromised in grand scale because of work like this. The economics of it all make us all aware that we cannot afford to compromise such inadequate ventures, while still maintaining the original disposition.
