"What does it say about what we do for a living if a professional designer and an 8 year old .."
doesnt say anything... it says what we do is fun and accessible..
Footballers earn silly amounts of money even though there are loadsa 8 year olds doing it too... doesnt devalue their career...on the other hand.. could you be scared that you might lose a comp to an 8 year old??
jaline.. wether ur starting out or not isnt really a guideline.. do it if you feel like it... i got into design cause i like renovating aesthetics.. so ANY comp (wether im a student or a fully seasoned pro) is gonna appeal.. its wether the reward compensates the time..
let the 8 year olds and design kings compete against me.... i got my crayons

life isn't nice Jaline. the world doesn't give a fuck about us equally. that's a guarantee.
once you leave whatever mindless cog job you're at and decide that you are worth more than a meager hourly wage, maybe you'll understand, until then, i'm talking to a wall.

(Jul 8 07, 10:28)Whatever, it's your life and personality. I just mean you take things way too seriously sometimes.
By the way, I make more than what most students make while doing school full-time, so this situation I'm currently in is perfect for me until I graduate. I like stability.

Personally, I think the site is so amateur, it will only attract amateurs involvement. If it does, it may well raise the bar at the lower end of the industry and instill a grander sense of financial prospect in that sector.
Our beef here should be about its fundamental proposition and representation ('top' creatives?) and whether it's a sham - not whether having a logo competition is good or bad thing for the middle and upper end of the industry - where, i assume, most NTers in this thread reside and where (quite clearly) topcreatives does not.

So, digilee, I think that speaks for itself.

You guys have some good points (and I was mainly referring to v5 as being more hardcore than most people here).
Maybe contests like this should have more guidelines. People just starting out should be allowed to enter something like this.
- MelC0
I admit that some competitions are fun, but what happens if everyone decides they can hold a competition for their projects? What does it say about what we do for a living if a professional designer and an 8 year old (if they choose to enter) can compete for the same work? It says that what we do is not valuable.
I know competitions are fun. I don't mean to be hardcore, but I'm just pointing out a position that most professional designers abide by.
- Jaline0
I just find some people here too hardcore about life.

I'm not talking about that statement. I'm talking about comparing rape to this.
Different things.
- version30
exactly the same thing, but feel free to tell me how you disagree.
the most important part of that statement being;
"their abundance does not justify their existence."
- Jaline0
not the same thing.
- version30
Jaline, I hope you see my point here. There are many rapes, world wide everyday, leading to insecurity, disease, unwanted pregnancy, and death. is it okay if you become one of their statistics?
their abundance does not justify their existence.
- Jaline0
That's a good article.
I still think designers just starting out or people who need some cash would enter this contest.
- MelC0
That was my point, but you put is so much more eloquently.
I'm not even going to go on a rant about this but Graphic Design as a profession is brought down a notch by people who think they can get us to "compete" for work.http://www.gdc.net/for_business/…
So, digilee, I think that speaks for itself.

There are so many contests like this. This is probably the wrong forum to post in, but at the same time there aren't many design forums around.
It's a contest. If you don't want to, don't enter. But some people may be interested in it.
It clearly is the same as Threadless. Lots of people work extra hard to get their design up there and it never will be.
All in moderation.
