Hey-o...
I've got two .mov files one of an animation of vines growing.. .and another of the exact same thing but done as an alpha chanel (IE... its in black and white.. the background being black and the vines being white)
How do I use the alpha video as a mask for the actual animation?
Sorry if i didn't explain myself well.

Do you mean how to make an alpha matte in After Effects? Or are you trying to get alpha video into flash/flv?
- version30
yeah a bit of explanation might curb my smart ass remarks because i know how to do this in AE and have a link for flash

Oh you guys are so charming...
OK... so I have TWO Video files (that I did not produce)
They are the exact same animation... The main video file is of vines growing... the second file is the exact same animation only done in black and white.
I want to use the black and white version to mask out the background of the main vines animation.

after affects is commonly referred to as AE in my experience, have fun with that
AFX is just aphex twin being awesome under a different name, so i couldn't get past your ignorance, purely coincidental that our stupidity ran headlong into one another

put the 2 files in one comp.
put alpha above.than select alpha matte layer 2 in layer 1
- tank020
AE jup..but kinda logic hej version, that AFX means after effects ;)

Use Luminosity blend mode. Just b/c the other video is B/W doesn't mean it has an alpha channel.

couldn't get past it tank, :) i saw AFX and instantly started listening to the drugks album disc 2 and never looked back :D

haha true...

i've always called it afx and never wound up having a conversation about intellegent dance music or whatever it's called

(though i continue to wonder why you want to kill all cash)

I like his Caustic Window & Polygon Window stuff too, but that Richard D James album is really my favorite.

OK... and the final answer is...
Make sure "track matte" option is turned on in your timeline. Choose the video footage layer... click the drop down that says "none" and choose Luma Matte with the alpha video as the source layer.
You know.. as long as you have some thick skin there are always some quick answers to be found here on newstoday.. thanks fellas.
