if in the course of spending about 60 hours on a portfolio website, you came to consider the client a friend, and the client didn't have much money, and had a family to feed, how much would you charge per hour so that you felt like you were getting paid enough, but you weren't putting a friend in financial jeopardy?

base it on the technology used. is there a cms? don't sell that short

Some kind of payment plan? Like financing a car.

Rand I thought you had all the answers... now this?
:D
But good question. I'd say if the work was good and it was a good addition to your portfolio, AND it was a rare occurance, AND you had enough $$ coming from other places, I'd try and reduce the overall cost, or at least put him on some kind of a payment plan.
Just my two cents.

I know where you're going with this, Rand. After dutchie almost made everyone cry in the blog thread, I was going to write either - what I did, or: I understand what Rand means by not wanting to bill for months.

you can't put a price on friendship
- version30
if a friend refuses to pay, apparently they can

I kind of feel like it's easier to charge less when you have already completed the work. Maybe that's just me.
Personally, I'd significantly lower the price. Don't have exact numbers, since I'm a student.
Maybe if you were more specific with how tough it was to do the work, or if you're doing well enough to not get paid that much for this project.

Did he know what to expect? Will he be surprised by the price tag? What was he thinking hiring a top designer? Does he think your in-laws don't need a new lawnmower?
Be careful, this might end this way: you lower your price, he tells everyone how you ripped him off.

if it's to help him gain clients (the portfolio) tell him that once he does to give you a percent.
maybe that's too complicated. can he do anything in exchange? i'd say my sympathy hourly rate would be around 15/hr.
so rand. have i mentioned how hard things have been with me lately?
