stay at the buffalo mountain lodge where i worked! it's up on a foot hill. i also worked at the travelers inn which is cheap but on banff ave. it's beauftiful it practically doesn't matter where you stay just make sure to get out a lot.

love it.
i was there this past april and it rules. the Fairmont is very nice although certainly not in Banff (it's in Lake Louis; about a 20 minute drive into Banff).
I stayed at a very good friends house/cabin in Canmore (~5 min drive from Banff) and it rules. if it is lodging you are trying to bargin, Canmore will be more affodable, but Banff is the center for all activity. mind you though, Canmore is an awesome place to be out in at night and day, it is just simply smaller.

there are fairmont hotels in lake louise and banff. The banff one is a 1 minute drive down into the town, or a 6-7 minute walk. Lake louise is about 40 minutes drive but well worth it to check it out.
Make sure you see Moraine Lake
and if you got the time, hire a car and drive to lake Peyto. crazy blue!!and if you want a nice mountain climb, Sulphur mountain is good, and you can catch the gondola down for free!

It really doesn't matter what hotel you choose, they're all great, and let's be honest, when you're staying in a beautiful town like that, are you really gonna spend much time in the hotel?
The prices aren't as bad you would think either. I remember staying at the Banff Caribou Lodge in the middle of January for around $70 CDN per night.

did you do any back-scratchers in '88 there, Ned?

Do you have to get buses to the ski?? A place I have looked at are about $3320 CAD per person but it includes the ski pass for 11 nights - seems expensive to me tho...

depends where you are skiing.
Bus to norquay, $5
Bus to Sunshine Village $10
Bus to Lake Louise $20 i thinki think with some ski passes you get free busses anyways. if youre paying that much for accom and ski passes i'd hope i was getting busses with that too.
its something like that anyways...or it was when i was livin there in 2004
not sure about accomodation prices so i cant help you on that sorry.

and if you're planning on hiring a car, its much cheaper to hire a car in calgary and drive to banff rather than rent it in banff.

Spend new years in Banff if you like.. but do most of your skiing at Kicking Horse... much better than the resorts directly in the banff area... and not too far either.
