Just on my dinner at the studio and realise that I've always wondered why monkeys can't talk yet parrots can.... Anyone know? It just baffles me and need to get it off my chest.

parrots are 99% human and 1% water, apes are only half human, the other half I don't know
- bolus0
it's not like the parrots know what they are saying, they just imitate sound, probably something which was useful in the struggle to survive...... just a thought

and if they had called monkees parrots, it would've been to obvious that they were imitating beatles

they must be the "speak to evil" monkeys

nice answers bolus... but dya recon it's to do with their voice box? Maybe with the power of the parrots voice and the monkey's brain you could create a parrakey. Although it might sound like Joe Pasquali and look like Barbra Streisand

The limit is not intellectual, but physical. Because they don't have the same kind of voice box, monkeys just can't make the same kinds of sounds that humans can. Many birds, on the other hand, are able to make a wide variety of sounds; in nature, they somtimes use this ability to mimic the calls of other birds.
Interestingly, there has been some success teaching apes sign language. (The most famous case is Koko the gorilla http://www.koko.org/index.php.) Intellectually, apes appear to be much more capable with language than birds, which generally can only learn to repeat particular phrases, as compared to composing new sentences.

Monkeys do talk. They talk monkey-speak.
For example:
"Oo-oo, ah-ah!" means "Can I have a ham and egg sandwich?" in monkey language.Parrots don't talk. They are imitating sounds.
- Jaline0
^ well, obviously parrots can communicate with other parrots in some way.
- harlequino0
