go research and good luck
Don't compare TV's at the store, people mess with the settings, so it's not really a good way to choose a tv. Go by features, all tv's can be calibrated to look perfect... in gneral

yeah, i saw a 1080p and 720p side by side at Fry's and could see a very noticable difference.
they were have a sale so i got a 1080p 56" samsung for $1450
the next week they went back up to $2400... ouch!

get 1080p.. I'm glad I did. You'll be regretting not doing so a few years down the line when HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray catch on and get cheaper. 1080i looks blurry. It's because the signal is interlaced, so you get motion artifacts. I typically prefer 720p to 1080i for this reason, but 1080p owns them both. I can tell the difference pretty easily, but I do have a good source to compare. You can find a good 1080p set at 37-42" for $700-1k. Check out Westinghouse, they make decent sets for cheap. You can usually find deal's at places like costco and sam's club.

last monster brand cable I bought the cable pulled out of the plug when I tried to remove it from my xbox. I took it right back never falling for that shit again

Get a 1080p. Don't wimp out. Think about it, people keep TV's forever and they will eventually broadcast in 1080p and beyond.

yeah, that article pretty much sums it up.
"Once you get a good HDMI connection, our tests indicate, you can expect flawless performance from any 4-meter cable, regardless of price. "That is what I would expect from the HDMI cables," says Maxim's Nelson. "It is not too difficult to make them work perfectly at 4 meters.""

the cables are a myth to a point. tweeter tried to sell my poor mother $300 worth of cables when she was looking at a new lcd.
here's a good article pc world debunking the high price cable myth: http://www.pcworld.com/article/i…

don't forget to get good cables to hook up your upconverting dvd player to an hdtv when you eventually get one. the cables make a difference.

(Jun 12 07, 09:03)I don't think you need the $100 cables the stores try to sell you.
Case in point: Apple products are normally all overpriced for what you get, the HDMI cable for apple TV is only $20 vs. the $100 stuff the big box stores tell you you need.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-…By cables elsewhere, you don't need the ones they tell you you do.

yeah, i got an upconvert dvd player as well to salvage my dvd collection - because streching a 720 wide image to 1920 with a dvd player that only has regular a/v outputs doesn't look very good.

p.s. I dont plan on watching porn on a 42" lcd with surround sound. I'm sure this thing is so bright and loud my holly rollin neighbors could hear and see through the blinds.
10 sec quicktime movies are just fine with me.

Somewhat related...
I just bought a new DVD player on Friday that has something called "HD upconversion" and essentially improves the quality of a regular DVD up to 1080i.
It has an HD output on it as well. Sadly I have no HD TV at the moment, but when I do it should be interesting to see the quality.

only hd dvd and bluray emit a 1080p signal and only if you have a huge set and sit real close to the tv will you be able to tell the difference.

(Jun 12 07, 08:50)exactly...so unless you're also prepared to pay $1k or so on one of those players as well, it might not be worth it.

it's not the 1080 brother, it's in the actual type of telly. Have a good look for the lcd plasma thread.

I just bought a SHARP 42 LCD 1080 but my friend keeps telling me that the 1080 isnt worth it and to return it. I can't find a single bad review about this set but have read that 1080 can be blurry watching sports and gaming.

I say go for the 780p, I don't think you want to have your porn so clear you see pimples on asses...

Buy the best, and you won't need to ask questions.
