Depend on what you want to accomplish. Hue/Sat is more similar to Selective Color. If the image is RGB I'd use H/S if its CMYK i usually use Curves or S C.

hue/sat all the way!

hue/sat & color balance are 2 completely different things
that's like asking if i need the air compressor or the jack to check my oil WTF?!?!

they are different, but I use them for the same application:
changing colors/hues
they vary much more when you are messing with the brightness settings in H/S

color balance is just levels with a different interface.
both have their strengths.
how about channel mixer?

I'm the only person who uses Selective Color. It freaks out leads when they see me use it but I never get any complaints about my work so it works.

Interesting stuff Redmond, Im feeling the comic illustration.

Thanks. I don't use the selective color for illustration, it's photo manipulation mostly. It's harder to control then hue saturation but it gives quicker results at the same time. I mostly modify the whites neutrals and blacks.

HS is great for quickly creating different colour ways, but that's all I really use it for..

I'm selective.
Curves is good.
Hue is just brutal
