Not bagging on madirish's post by any means, but it brings me to a question:
What exactly do you consider "branding?"
At our firm, it was tossed around constantly as the word for our new logo, the process of coming up with it, how we'd use it, etc.
But I once read a very insigtful article that defined branding as "the perception formed by a viewer (customer, buyer, etc.) based on the combination of identity, message, positioning, and reputation." It went on to say that too many people think branding is a tangable "thing" you can interact with in the creative process, ex: a logo, a font used in a company name, etc.
I like that way of looking at it and it was hard to sit around here and listen to that word all day when what they really wanted to say was "identity."

mg33...that definition of branding is exactly correct. When people talk about logo, collateral, etc they are only talking about their identity. A companies identity is a part of what helps to establish the brand but those terms are not interchangeable.

Wish I could have made that point better around here. Far too many months of hearing people say, "We need new branding... So and So is working on the branding..."

totally agree mg33. to be honest, i should have written "and" inbetween those two words, but just did it quickly.
i do not feel for a second, they are interchangeable. and i am curious who is working on both for this particular brand.

Taken from the book "ZAG,:" "A brand is a person's gut feeling about a product, service, or company." So the real question is, does UO create individual style or do the individuals create UO's brand?
