anything cool to do for a long weekend in maine? (i want to go up into the part with no roads!)
The wife and I want to drive up from NYC, maybe go kayak in somewhere cool, something like that - any suggestions?

go do some white water up on the Penobscott or the Dead river – its spring now and the water should be running.
Check out Mad River white water guides – may have to look up their number.

Madirish lives there. He'll chime in in about 2,3 hours.

Head up to Bar Harbor and check out Acadia National Park. You can hike for days. You can rent bikes, or just do some hiking. Then take a drive to the top of Cadillac Mtn. for some AMAZING 360º views of, well, everything.
It's so beautiful this time of year!

I second Bar Harbor... theres a number of islands you can hop a canoe and row out to...
... you can also join the drunken jocks who are probably gearing up right about now to start canoing the saco... but that's only a last resort. :)

Hi. I grew up in Maine.
Bar harbor is awesome. However, there are many places that are just as nice withoput the hype and roaming herds of obnoxious tourists too. Try Boothbay Harbor. It is further down the coast to the south. Near Pemaquid, which is beautiful as well. Not so many tourists, and just as beautiful. Also, it is about 1-1.5 hours from Portland, so if you wanted to head into town and check out the art museum or the watefont, no problem.
Good luck and enjoy!

I was just on Mount Desert Island (MDI) this weekend and it was awesome as always. Bar Harbor in general, sucks ass, but that is 100% due to the tourismn overload there. Southwest, Bass, Seal Harbor's are were it's at. more infor there if you choose to go up.
The rivers are all running, but the weather will be chilly on them. i am not even sure if they are being run yet. the fishing on the other hand, is going off. stripers are running and life is great. once water temps perk up ~ 3degreesF , it will benutty with stripers. but i digress.
MDI is ~ 3.5 hours from Portland. But to be honest, i would say stay in southern maine and Portland. Fantastic restaurants, farms, the coast, and islands here make it best bet for a long weekend, especially if you have not been here before..... and you *will* get lost. :)
I can recommend a bunch of places to stay, eat, go to, hike, eat, drink, visit, did i mention eat? so just hot me up. email probbaly better, unless the NT communicity wants to know how much Maine rocks it. hell, i will even make you cocktails for you guys on our private cove here if you want... ;)

Madirish, lets hear your picks for restaurants, farms, spots down in Southern Maine. My brother lives up there and I dated a girl from Boothbay Harbor so I've spent lots of time in the state... Definitely to hear someone else's two cents on spots.

Not a trace! I've written it off as a learning experience - never park on the street!
But I never got to taste off-roading which I'm bummed about and I've been thinking about tricking out an FJ Cruiser! Maybe this fall. For the time being, I'm going to enjoy this new track toy of mine! :)

(May 23 07, 05:57)Slightly broken, but I got ya... YEah, I'm living now in Savona, in Liguria on the coast west of Genova. Got a beautiful view of the sea from where I am sitting right now. Been doing some work down near Firenze, between there and Savona – and currently have an offer down that way, so we might be moving down to a really beautiful part of Tuscany ion the next months... we'll see. In the meantime, I need to go have a swim before it gets to late. Back in a flash
