I'm off to NYC at the end of the week for a few days (until next wed).
I've got lots of stuff planned already, I've been a couple of times but not for quite a few years.
Can any NYC residents point me to some cool places to visit that are not on the tourist radar.I'm thinking little design exhibitions, nice bars or places to eat, anything that's going on at the moment. I'll be there over memorial day weekend I believe.
Also great shops to go to, book shops, clothing etc. the dollar is weak right now and needs exploiting!I've waited until now to ask about this so I can hopefully get some up to the minute info.
thanks!
* PS I did a search and the only sizeable thread about stuff to do in NYC was posted by that guy hooking up with some rich old ladyfriend. suffice to say, it was not that useful, though funny.

nothing off the top of my head at the moment... i'm still half asleep. But we should grab a beer and you can tell me what really happened at that interview.

haha skt.
BaskerviIle, i'll try to think of a better list for you, but make sure to hit up Brooklyn for sure. And if you're here for longer than the weekend, go meet Sagmeister. Email me and i can get you the contact info for a nice members only bar. Wish i could meet you but I'll be in San Diego that wknd.
more soon...

thanks ampersanderson,
those are great links. I'm sure it's the same for people visiting london, but it's nice to find some little out of the way places, that aren't full of german tourists (not that there's anything wrong with that).anyone else got anything, keep em coming.
Skt, thanks for the offer, I'm going with my girlfriend, not sure if she'd be up for meeting up with a scot from the internet (and she likes scottish accents)
also, how can I go and say hi to sagmeister, seems a bit unlikely.

(don't forget to tip your waitress.)

yeah, I read that like 20% is normal for tipping in the US. Is that right?
Still I guess with no official minimum wage it a lot of states they need it!
skt, have you got any good tips for general day to day cultural differences between london and NY, you must have noticed lots when you moved out there.
Stuff like how people act of the subway, or is it same rules as london (don't ever look at anyone or talk to anyone)

i'm here all night, don't forget to tip your..... oh never mind.
as far as day to day tips on cultural differences go, you really don't need to worry about anything. people here are actually much nicer than in london. so if someone talks to you on the subway, you don't need to assume they are a sex offender... they might just be being nice.
