thanks for your responses. I'll look into each and everyone of them - they're all good and valid!

when we did CDs with flash, we had one of our developers write a little helper app to launch files. you just changed a text string to set what file it launched. it took him all of 3 minutes to make, so i'm sure it's not too complicated.

Director is more powerful, but Flash gets the job done for most of our CD ROMS.
Look into JWEB for launching files from a CD and having them appear in front of the project window. (JWEB is windows only, sorry).

MrD is completely correct on this one, but I just did a project like that and rocked fscommand cause it wasn't a big vector / scripted animation fest, just simple FLVs and images... It worked great for the project I did...

i didnt finish my thought
flash cant manage RAM very well. the strength of director has been allocation of memory and use of it.
also complexity of lingo and execution are still much better than flash.
depending on what you want to do
but if there was a highly interactive app with heavy use of video or vector point, i would still shell it with director

flash = bad memory management

thanks Ken, I'll try that

You can launch a pdf by using the fscommand. like this:
fscommand("exec", "launch.bat");Then write the bat file to open the PDF.

The reason the client wants a CD is because they have found that sometimes people they want to show their work to do not have an internet connection(?). I think it's mainly in places like meeting rooms etc. So the CD ROM gets a little more life!
I'm not too happy about using the get url command since it launches a browser rather than the application.
Any one else care to chip in?
Votes for flash or director?

I've used Zinc in various CDRom projects and its command base allows it to do basically anything you like.
Best thing about it is the ability to create transparent windows, so your interfaces can be any shape you like.

I thought CD ROMs were pretty much killed of by broadband.

Am about to create an interactive CD ROM for a client. In the past we've done these using Director and flash. However, am now thinking about doing this only using flash. Anyone had any experience of flash based CD ROMs compared with Director based ones?
We'd need to be able to launch PDF/Word documents from the CD. It's not too difficult to do this with Director but Flash doesn't offer this directly. Anyone used the MDM/ZINC application which modifies the Flash FS COMMAND?
You're thoughts are welcomed!
