Saw this last night and thought it was fantastic - seems to be a bit of a love/hate thing going on with it at the imdb.

I liked it. 30 minutes into it I thought it was the biggest piece of shit ever committed to film...but I sat through it and then at some point it got better and better...

That kid's a great actor, played the role perfectly. I hope more people see this beautiful little film.

(Apr 23 07, 11:01)and why so my moth friend?

...and "Film Noir" doesn't excuse it either.

I didn't believe any of the characters, and couldn't care less about any of them.
And the references to Clockwork Orange were just daft.

I hear ya...just for me at some point it went from trite to clever for me and I ended up enjoying it...

(Apr 23 07, 11:07)I'm curious what you mean about that. I went to a screening and a Q/A with Rian Johnson, the writer-director. That never came up in an audience of several hundred. Although references to Millers Crossing and Big Chill did constantly.

Yeah I watched it the other night, didnt take it serious and thats probably what the film is about??
High school students that deal a bit of weed get into a little trouble bla bla bla, but all styled out like a high suspense drama.
well thats what I thought

i love this movie.
a lot.

Actually they're dealing heroin.
According to the director, it's more about giving a different angle and life to the stories of Dashiel Hammet, who is the primary inspiration.

(Apr 23 07, 10:48)And that seems mirrored here on NT as well now...

that's weird - i just watched it yesterday, too. i liked it. some of the dialogue was rather poetic.
the only things i was left wondering - when did they ever go to class, and where were their parents?
young people these days, sheesh!

Thought even disregarding the dialogue it caught that insular teenage thing really well. Plus I'm a sucker for dialogue that someones put a little effort into.
That Gene Hackman movie Heist is another one - would've been a pretty mediocre thriller but the David Mamet dialogue lifts it nicely, even with all the predictable double crosses.
In fact, that was the other thing I liked about this movie, it didn't use any of the normal lazy plot devices to move the story along.

This was one of the last movies I ever bought.
A lot of hype, I was looking forward to it, I thought the movie was okay (better than most of 2005) - perhaps I should watch it again though.
I got Netflix afterwards so I wouldn’t buy anymore one watchers so to speak.
