Brauer Neue Bold is pretty darn close:
- Rand0
Ultramagnetic?

hard to tell from the scan...

the inkspread makes it difficult to tell. my guess is helvetica inserat, but check through these too:

Both Brauer and Ultramagnetic are very close and might just do the trick. Thanks!

*brauer is more thoughtfully drawn imho.

it was used in NY magazine a couple of issues ago (the office issue). I'm not all that familiar with the magazine so I'm not sure if it is in constant use.

seems to be still in use
http://nymag.com/close as i can find is opti alternate three, but it's does not have the inkspread effect of the nymag one.

the font is called Elderkin. It's designed by Erik Olson. Unfortunately he pulled it from the shelves. So I'll have to settle for something else. Brauer Neue is rather nice - but the lower case "r" bugs me a little.
Thanks for the help.
