What is the design scene like in Calgary? I am going to be there in May and want to meet with people there. I know Critical Mass and Veer are based there - who else?
Thanks

i hope you have a lot of money saved up to move here, it isn't cheap. our vacancy rate is like 0.5% and just to give you an idea of how much houses are selling for, the 3 bedroom house accross the street from my place just sold within 4 days for $700,000. it isn't easy living here, i'll tell you what.

calgary has a massiv shortage of skilled labor.
i was just there, it was rad.

(Mar 21 07, 08:29)Yeah my brother headed out there last year. He bought a box of a house for 500k. and he waited a year for it to be built; and it's still not done :S

I just got a letter from the Canadian government about my application, looks like they're going to process within 30 days. Pity I'm living in the States now and have no savings left to continue with the application, eh?
Timing's perfect. Thanks ya bass!

oh man, that sucks for your brother. it's just the way things are here though, we basically have no quality of life. there are just too many people here and not enough resources and everything is so fucking expensive it really pisses me off. i wish i didn't have to live here anymore.

I'm sure it will level out in a few years.

(Mar 21 07, 08:41)Won't be able to now but at least this way I can still visit Canada from time-to-time (for less money than a UK flight) :D

will the US allow you to stay there?

if you are into oil, there is a shitload of money to be made there

We here have the 2nd largest amount of Corp HQs in Canada plus the exploding Energy Industry, so most of the design here is geared towards the corproate market. Great money, but not always super creative.
Some other companies in town to look at are:
IDEACA (more development heavy than design)

(Mar 21 07, 08:39)strange to hear you bashing Calgary so decisively. the cbc (radio) has been promoting it so much recently.
the growth it's experiencing must be scary though. it'll level out soon - hopefully there isn't a big deflation.
sounds like a good place for good designers, though. there's an opportunity there to help solve some big problems.

it is the land of opportunity right now, but it's a rough road to travel on. unless you are rich to start out with i can't imagine just moving here. a lot of people are selling everything and moving their families here because they have a great job, only to find they can't find a place to rent, or can't afford to buy a house. there is a lot of families living in shelters right now.

BUT there is a shitload of money to be made if you can do it!

I heard tim hortons workers in Fort McMurray are payed like $18 an hour. But I guess they are in ft. mcMurray and have to live in some shitty conditions. I hear that place is a disease pool :S

the oils sands developmets are going to ruin our province/country. what an environmental disaster :(
- walkman0
i agree.
Also, isn't the Calgary area going to be short on fresh water sources soon?

(Mar 21 07, 09:22)Are you talking about in the processing of the tar sands?
They're are actually working on new methods of getting it out that is more efficient.
