Hello.
My girl has just got a Scholarship to do her Phd at U-pen in Philly. I was wondering if anyone had any experince of moving to the States from the UK... is it going to be as much of a VISA nightmare as i imagine? do I have to get a job before I move out?
Any help, tips or comments would be very very much appreciated
cheers

It could be quite difficult. It would be best if you found a job before you moved here. Are you willing to pay for your own legal fees? that could make it a little bit easier. Maybe get in touch w a headhunter in the Philly area to see if companies are willing to pay. Unfortuntely, I would assume there are many talents in the Philly area and it's not necessary for them to import someone from the UK.

I tried to do something similar myself. My girlfriend lives in OC so I tried to go out there to live/work for a year or two. I basically just found immigration to be a catch-22 ... I couldn't get a visa without a job/sponsorship offer and couldn't get any interest from agencies without first having a visa in place.
I know there's plenty of other people that have made the move but I really don't know how. It's no easy process.
I think the best thing you can do is start researching and approaching agencies as soon as you can with the hope that you'll find one that's willing to offer you a job and help you through the visa process. Put together an awesome portfolio and try to get it in front of as many people as possible. If you can prove that you can offer an agency something that they can't find so easily in the States, you'll have more of a chance.
Good luck!

I just spent 5 months in NY on an exchange, got back at the turn of the year. Student VISAs have a shitload of paperwork, I don't know about more permanent ones. Student VISAs don't allow any you to take any kind of paid employment in the States (you get sent home). Once you're in, you're in though, so get it out the way.

Sorry I misread, I thought you were speaking of your girlfriend.

being engaged won't make any difference ... only if she was American. Not sure how it would stand if you were married though. That may be different.

if you're married you may be able to get a visa through her, but not sure of the process.

Fly to mexico and cross the border from there, they do it all the time!
easy peasy!

options are to either sign up for school yourself .. get engaged/married or find a company to sponsor you by april 1st and apply for the h1b visa
those are in high demand and you wouldn't be able to start work until october .. takes 6 months to process.
i'd look into the school option if i were you.
