This story is really horrible. However, the media always focuses on these sort of sensational situations. You'd think that society was going down the tube. In reality, violent crime, including rape, has dropped dramatically since 1994 (in the US anyway):

Considering that's the time the internet was starting to become widely used, is there a correlation there?

i think things like youtube and basically the rest of the internet in general force kids to grow up more quickly. they become exposed to a lot of things that they normally wouldn't encounter until later in life (and i'm not just talking 10 year old viewing porn).
if used in the right way it can be a good thing. problem is that kids are still kids when it comes down the bottom line and they don't have the necessary life experience to make rational decisions 100% of the time.
i often think about what it would be like to be about 13 years old right now and how my life would have been so different because of things like this.

16 years old isn't that young...

yes it is.

Any video about "rape" should be investigated. It shouldn't even exist to begin with.

I think everyone's gotten so jaded, they don't even know sarcasm anymore. Every episode I saw of Family Guy or South Park, I never even understood what was interesting or funny about it. It's like people's anal phase gets stretched out for years on end.
I'm not for censorship but things like violence and sexuality should be treated in a mature manner. Or it should remain something clearly 18+.

Reminds me of this great Johnny Rotten quote, about fans of Limp Bizkit
"They spend a great deal of time unlearning and being victims, ultimately. Theres some people like that in every generation, but this seems to be the majority in this one. Let them enjoy being stupid, because in 20 years time theyre going to be one sorry, sad sack of people, unemployingly ignorant." Johnny Rotten

i think ace got it right. i also heard of that study.
this has more to do with human nature than it does youtube or age.
people are more likely to respond to someone screaming fire than they are rape. there have been instances of rape on a busy street where no one stops to say anything or help the victim. those are adults, not kids and youtube has no connection whatsoever

YOU CAN TELL those children are lacking some serious love in their lives...
... love that can only come from Mom and Pop.
- Jaline0
acescence, your reading about human behaviour really makes sense. I completely believe it.
krez, it's more about the fact that the kids didn't know if what they were seeing was real or not. It's completely okay to be skeptical about it, but to not report it to someone...anyone...was a mistake.
Ponyboy, when discussing whether being 16 years old is young...it all depends. Don't you think they would know some of the horrors of rape? What about the "kids" who did the raping/drugging? Do you think they should be tried as minors?
Because I think the Canadian justice system is way too easy on teenagers like this. In fact, the law about not showing the face and name of the culprits is not right either. Some of the people who live in the neighbourhood, area, and school deserve to know which students were involved.

spending time with your kids has absolutely nothing to do with it.
its easy to say this or that is the reason for all of it. its just not that simple.

Pffff you've miss the boat,
here (italy) this situation has gotten out of hand,
first because the parents don't have any power or will to educate their children
second, because the school and teachers have given up on giving what is called "education"
third, because the student just don't give a fuck,
just last week some school principal got beaten up by angry parents after banning cell phone from school
from where do you think they get those creepy ideas?
- Jaline0
thanks, blackspade. Makes sense.

they said that about tv too..nothing new.
