I have heard great things about the both of these places, but I've heard some amazing things about Riviera Maya.

depends on what you want. sit around on a beach or maybe do some excursions?

Fly to St. Thomas, take the ferry to St. John. It's unbelievable. A national park. Secluded, green, awesome.

went to riviera maya on my honeymoon a couple years ago. we had a blast even though the place we were supposed to go got demolished by a hurricane. got a nice hookup at a different resort- really beautiful and nice people!

I've only been to the Mayan Riviera. The atmorpshere is painted on the walls. There's no real town to speak of, it's basically just a bunch of hotels and a strip mall carved into one of the worst jungles of the Yucatan.

If you're looking for seclusion and beauty look into visiting one of the smaller Islands near Cozumel like Isla Mujeres etc...it's much nicer and people actually live there and far less touristy than Cozumel or Costa Maya.

right on, mimio. there are some beautiful areas in the yucatan but cancun's like south beach/miami. what's the point.
cozumel's nice and the surrounding archaeological sites are unique...palenque and a bit further, chichen itza and uxmal. really worth a look if excursions are of any interest.

thanks all for your suggestions. though i still can't make up my mind.
i have been to cozmel, cancun and have done some mayan excursions. it was fun and wouldn't mind doing again.
as for caribbeans, i've been to aruba, barbados and puerto rico. is st thomas/st john more beautiful than those islands?

when you are on vacation you want service, service, service and that's what you'll find in mexico... Isla Mujeres and Playa Del Carmen are really great spots well...

i don't know how much "more" beautiful since most of the virgin islands are amazing, but i'd say st thomas/st john are worth a look, especially if you haven't been there before.

yeah, i want to stay at a nice hotel with great service.
it's gonna be for 5days so i need something to do. i don't think i can sit around doing nothing for 5days. maybe mexico would be better.
- -sputnik-0
yeah...mexico might offer more activities unless you seek out an island resort that has those, like horseback riding or climbing.
you can gamble on the islands if that's of interest :)

i just want to avoid tourist trap. it's inevitable but i just want to have a nice seclusion with a bit of luxury.

about 10 years ago i went to ambergris caye in belize, which was amazing. very few tourists, didn't wear shoes for 2 weeks even when browsing "main street" (it was so small). our rooms were individual thatched cabanas and it was comfortable w/out being crazy.
great diving, too. it's probably different now, but might be worth a look.

there are just so many beautiful places out there. it just takes some more effort to find these days.
i want to go to Los Roques but it's hard to get to.
