whenever i get checks for freelance work, i would once in awhile get a check paid to my website name instead of my name. i've been asking clients to write it in my name instead. it's a hassle for both parties.
i guess it's more professional to have clients pay to my website name instead my name. how do i go about getting an account in my website's name? is it as easy as going down to a bank and asking for one? is there tax things i need to do? how doe everyone here do it?

you need to file a dba (doing business as) with the county or state (depending on the state).

if its only once in awhile -
don't bother - maybe put on your invoice - just your name or payable to....if you want to use your website name - then I think you have to register that as a business name -
then go to bank and get business
cheques, etc.

I would like to know this too! Does it cost any extra or anything like that? I don't have the problem because on my invoices I say make it out to me.
Meeee curious!

tips.
explain to your clients that is they would like to not pay tax on the work then they get 1/2 off, but they can't 1099 you for the work.
if they want to write it off then charge twice as much as you normally would so you can pay the tax for the earned income.
this is shady and works best with friends / clients

filing a dba costs between 10 and 50 dollars.

of course, i regularly deposit checks that are not made out to me and they clear just fine. once the teller said "this isn't you" and wouldn't deposit it, so i walked over to the ATM and deposited it there, and it cleared.

i have 3 businesses, setting them up and registering their names cost me a total of about 100 bucks (i changed states). i use my personal bank account, and my tax id number is my social security number.
