I want a domian/url from someone that has not renewed their's which expired in Dec last year.
Does anyone know how long the owner has to renew before it goes back out to the open market? (I checked on the WhoIs database so I don't know how up-to-date it is)

check out drop-catching, if the domain has any worth it is likely one of the large drop catching companies will get it. domains "drop" back into the public domain at irregular intervals

I have 90 days on mine.

45 days is my understanding.

It's not that worthy.
I guess I should email Nominet to pre-register or summit

i got one after it expired on sept 18 and bought it on the 27th so 9 days later, i guess it depends on the registrar or something

Normally, the owner has 60 days notice with Nominet. At the deadline, the domain is then up for grabs.

Nice 30days to go

You'd be surprised what they buy up, happened to a friend of mine in a dispute with the registration company and when it came back on the market it was snapped right up - desipite the domain being just her name...

this is what i meant by 'any value'...if you really want it pay for the drop catching service.
checkout its stats at alexa for more info on value....
i think jaline also posted a valuation site teh other day

are there any laws nowadays against people buying domains and holding people/companies to ransom for them (so to speak) ?
- RoomFive0
not unless it is infringing on a trademark...its first come first served
UndoUndohmm, i thought i read somewhere awhile back that 'they' (whoever they are), were tightening up on it?

the thing is the domaining industry generates alot of $ for the DN authorities...

* bump
Does anyone have anything further to add to this question (pertaining explicitly to .co.uk domains)?
If that '60 days' figure is real, I have a month left on a domain I want - do I just hold out and try and grab, or is there a better (ie. not too expensive) way?

Dancer, use this Who is database: http://www.who.is/
Every domain name registrar has their own deletion dates, have a look at the latest update to that domain name you want to get and see what the status is and see that chart below.

I'm in the same position, Nairn. I have no idea what to do, but I'm thinking of going through Pool.com , mainly because of this article:
http://www.mikeindustries.com/bl…But I'm not sure I want to spend a lot of money.

Dancer, how did this work out for you?

I've got a few names through SnapNames... $60 min bid, but they are very good at getting hold of expiring domains before other services. (I shouldn't be telling you this of course..)
