In the bars, costes and buddah are good but f*cking pricey - Favela Chic is really worth it tho', cheep, gritty, Brazilian.

i am currently living in paris, by rue oberkampf - its a row of bars and restaurants that run up to menilmontant.
definitely would recommend spending an evening here, it is central but much more relaxed than the smart-casual atmosphere of the bars above.
places like cafe charbonne and the club nouveau casino usually have good things going on... but you can just walk along and take your pick. the cafe next to charbonne also has a small design bookshop in it.
cafe st. martin runs up from there and is a good place to have a walk, some great cafes and very good design bookshops too - mainly printed in english.
