- mpfree0
where?
;)
- nsa0
sigh. yeah... gotta find something good about that city.
- mpfree0
you'll figure it out. I'm sure it's very nice. It is or was the richest area per capita in the Union

I used to live in RI.
For riding bikes: Bristol (on the east side of the river, south of Providence), Narragansett (where i lived – gorgeous beach town), or Jamestown island, halfway across to Newport.
Vegetarian places: Not being one myself, I'm not sure; however, RI has some of the best food I've ever had. I think there are two restaurants on Wickenden (very close to RISD) that have good veggie stuff: an Indian restaurant and a Thai place, across the street from eachother. Can't remember the names, but they're right off 95, go west-ish on Wickenden. Wickenden Pizza is the first option for good pizza, it's just up the street from the Indian place.
If you like Italian and have cash to spend, go to Al Forno. Best Italian food in the country, period.
The Ocean Mist in Matunuck has great food in a divey bar right on the water. Watch people surf the point while chowing down on some bbq quesadillas. The list goes one...there are too many good places in Narragansett & Newport to mention. There's a bed & breakfast in Newport that has an insane Sunday brunch. Called Castle Hill or something like that. The White Horse Tavern in Newport is the oldest operational restaurant in the states, founded 1628.
Brown U has plenty of b'ball courts.
Not very many options in terms of galleries...the best areas are close to RISD, and in the old downtown area. There are plenty of galleries in the beach towns, but it's mostly your standard seashells and pastel bullshit.
Hope that helps? RI is a great place. Enjoy. However, FYI, I met more selfish assholes there than anywhere else, ever. And I was only there for a year.

In 5th grade I chose RI for my state report thinking it was the smallest state what could there be to write about? Big mistake!
- nsa0

(Jan 19 07, 09:03)nope. Nothing that really stands out. Everybody ends up going to either Bahstin or New York eventually. I worked at Numark, it was in-house and it sucked royale a la marketing blockheads, ego-fests and strange foreigners.
It seems RISD is really heavy on developping conceptual abilities, without much real-world training. This is common in art schools, but particularly prevalent @ RISD. The result seems to be a bit like the Cranbrook effect: plenty of talented, unemployable designers that end up working at Starbucks.

sleaziest strip clubs in the northeast! and so many!
RISD has a lot going on, you'll find plenty to do. Just think, you could be the next shepard fairey.
The whole area is super historic, tons of old factories, harbors, broken down industries etc that used to keep the Union pumping. And if you get bored, Boston is just a short, cheap commuter rail trip away.

ps: vegan restaurant

haven't been myself, just heard about it...

(Jan 19 07, 10:10)This also is true. Also, I would avoid driving in Boston if you can help it.
You should also take the ferry from Pt. Judith to Block Island sometime. The place is gorgeous, great for bike rides.

and surf the secret left w/ the clammers..... ;)

I know designers in Providence, but they either work freelance, in-house, or for some low-brow studio. Or they commute to Boston.
