i'd imagine a blu ray drive would make the already high price of a mac pro ridiculously higher, considering that sony is taking a massive loss just to keep up with production of the ps3. it's not clear if blu ray will even survive the format wars, and looking at sony's record with failed formats, it's a gamble.

You can hold your breath for every new bit of technology that might come out sometime. Or you can buy what is available now and either upgrade it when it is available OR buy an external blu ray disc drive, which is what I plan to do.

(Jan 15 07, 08:04)i was just at ces, and the rumor was that, although the lg player can play video from both blu-ray and hd-dvd, you cn't access the menu system on hd-dvd discs, so this player isn't really a viable sollution...

the real test would be a hybrid hd-dvd/blu-ray burner. Otherwise the porn industry will call it hd-dvd.

geez..I guess the main point of my question didn´t get through..

the ability to put 40 xvid dvd-rips on one disc is a crazy concept though. Although not HD, that is a lot of f-ing movies.

By the time they figure out which format to use, all HD will be avail for download like music.

I hope you are right. "a friend of mine" started downloading xvid dvd-rip movies in november and now has over 150 full length movies.
;)

yeah, bandwidth is the only real peoblem (besides licensing) and that is being solved through fiber-optics or whateverthe hell soon enough. But yeah, I know some peeps that enjoy downloading full, high-quality movies and burning them with dvd quality

All these formats are rediculous FUCK PROPRIETARY!!!!

I got a rip of the borat movie that you would swear was the dvd. I burned it and watched it on a 42 inch 16x9 hd lcd last week and it was excellent. the sound wasn't 7.1 in the surround sound but who cares about borat in 7.1?
- Soler0
yeah, even new movies are out there. I scoped the new Rocky flick last week and same deal- on a 32" sony trinitron flatscreen it looked DVD quality.

borat is 716 MB. looks great.

(Jan 15 07, 11:18)I would consider the resounding tone of "BluRay is dead" to be a valid response to your question. If I think BluRay is a dead-end tech, then why would I anticipate Apple putting it in their computers? Connect the dots, buddy. Geez.

I've seen movies as large as 1gb but who cares? soon that will be chump space.
- mrdobolina0
Why would you want one?
- mrdobolina0
1gb aint shit now, I just recently bought my first dvd burner just for backups and things. and started converting xvids and burning them to dvd and it works great and takes about an hour from start to finish. I don't even have a dvd player on my tv anymore, gave it to my mom.
The d-link medialounge plays xvids wirelessly. It is like apple tv minus HD. They have a model that plays hd and you don't need to use iTunes and you can hack the shit out of the software to make it play quicktime and wmv, mpeg4 etc.
this software that works for the d-link called tversity, while ugly, is incredible, cnn and bbc news feeds, works with podcasts and vidcasts thru rss, really cool, I learned a ton if shit about networking just getting stoned and playing with it.

(Jan 15 07, 08:04)well, not exactly. the war isn't over until one or the other ceases to be as they will not likely coexist peacefully.
