It was a stupid contest - I don't think anybody can question that - and the masterminds should face some sort of repercussions. However, this woman, of her own free will, subjected her body to behaviour it is clearly not designed for and she ultimately paid with her life. Tragic? Yes. A stupid thing to do? Yes. Maybe she didn't realize what consequences could arise, but ignorance rarely indemnifies.
That's how I's see's it, neeways.

Interesting responses in this post..those on the more conservative side seem to take the stance "Ultimately it'd her fault for submitting to this contest." While those of the more liberal bias are like "What a shitty society in that billions are spent promoting game systems so that parents desperate for their childrens affection and happiness will submit themselves to dangerous and undignified things simply to get basic human desires. (ie the desire to be a good parent, not to gain material goods)"
There is a mix of tragedy and humor in the story, but all truly tragic things have a bit of humor in them as well...but it's interesting that those who suppose personal responsibility on the part of the victim absolve responsibility of the moron who thought up this stupid contest.
I'd bet dollars to donuts zero research went into thinking one could literally drink enough water to die by the powers that be at the radio station. And holding it in has nothing to do with it..you simply put enough water into the body and even the urination system can't handle it, your blood's salinity gets fucked and water enters your cells, especially in the brain causing swelling - especially edema in the brain. When the woman complained of the headache her brain was already saturated and she needed immediate attention at the point. And that would be the first sign of anything wrong..very very dangerous contest that says to the contestant - if you start feeling bad, stop! Well, the first sign of not feeling right with this, you're already well on the way to fucked city...It's like throwing someone off a building and saying, when you get close enough to the ground, stop. (My wife is a doc and has the big brains in the family and we discussed this sad story over dinner last night...heck, even I was suprised by the idea you could drink yourself to death...)

TBO, i really like that response.
However...
Is it Henry Fords fault people die in car accidents? or the dealership, or the CEO of the car line?
She has a personal responsibility to herself to sustain her own life. I view this as an "accidental suicide"
Is he/she first responsible for playing the "chubby bunny" game responsible for all related deaths since?
what about slip and falls in the shower? who invented the bathtub? it must be his fault right? or the soap manufacturer?
there is a line of personal responsibility this woman was unable to determine.
what about all the other contestants who did not die? their statistics alone show the competition was not as dangerous as those berating the radio station would make it seem.
Granted a bad situation, but her death was a result of her own actions, plain and simple. she drank the water with her own actions, she was not connected to a feeding tube or automated dispenser. her hands unscrewed that lid and put the bottle to her mouth.
I'm sure her mother told her what all of ours did too:
"If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you?"

I resisted joining the thread and I'm glad v4 spared me some writing.
People are dumb, always have been. The more responsibility for themselves the state takes off them, the dumber they get and the less freedom we all have in result. That's why I think people should be treated as adults or we're back in kindergarten run by protective, more and more Orwellian nanny state.I didn't know you could die of water poisoning either, but it always seemed clear to me if you keep drinking endlessly, something will break inside.
A sad story, but if there was a waiver signed (and it's the US, so there sure was), the radio is not responsible imo.

what a stupid competition.
i thought everyone knew you could die of drinking too much water, but on reflection i probably knew that from going raving with medical students as a teenager, oh the paradox – drugs won't kill you, water will! ban water!! sue Evian!!!!
but i do think the radio station was ridiculously irresponsible. they clearly did no research.

true Vespa, but I think eating contests have a long tradition, especially in the US..

10 employees of the station canned...radio station about to be sued in a wrongful death suit:
http://www.sacbee.com/101/v-prin…
And apparently a RN called the station during the contest and warned them about the dangers of water intoxication and the DJ's made fun of her on the air. OOps....that's a career ender...
- TheBlueOne0
"One of the DJs even admitted they maybe should have done some research before the contest."
Ouch.

TBO seeing it to the end, excellent research

it's been floating around the house here too. nice to add some more to it.
seems like the radio station started cutting them loose before the charges were aimed at the station itself
"They are no longer with the company for violating the terms of their employment agreements with the station"
i wonder what that was exactly?
- TheBlueOne0
Probably something about not killing the listeners...

Wow..excerpts from the contest broadcast...
