oh man.
there is a 1972 280 SEL 4.5 in *perfect* condition (never seen light of a single winter day) located about 200m from where i sit right now. it has 3 rare options:
- the 4.5L
- electric sunroof
- A/Cthe thing is SICK and we considered buying it for a little while. it has something like 38k original miles on it. one owner. so awesome.
i would say though, look for undercarriage rust on those- they are not galvanized and the fender wells along w/ rear panels could be soft, depending on where it is from.

I haven't seen it yet, a guy at my wifes work is selling it. He said all it needs is a manifold. I still have to go look at it.
Are there any things I should be aware of with this?... I only have experience restoring American cars... last one was a 68 Mustang fastback.
The price is $2000 CDN.

i dont know about that aprticular car but if its been looked after you want to see LOTS of receipts and a good history to it. have a look and compare how much other similar cars are going for and feel for how desperate the guy is to sell it, maybe even go to yr local classic car place and ask there.
if its very cheap (which it seems to me) be wary

do this to it, you'll be my hero

"Lovecraft Biofuels sells vegetable oil conversion kits and conversion components for diesel cars, trucks, generators, or anything else that runs on diesel fuel!"
I don't think this is a diesel car?... doing some research on this ride as we speak.

one word...
money pit
any rust and you are looking at 100's of hours of work

(Jan 11 07, 12:10)it's old enough, one of the right model, so it's literally 50/50 if its diesel or not
be cool if it was :)

(Jan 11 07, 12:14)"I'm cool with that, it's a project car... I figure it will be a work in progress over the next 10 years... I love doing this stuff and things like body work are not a big deal... my old man was a welder among many other things and taught me all I need to know. We got a 68 Mustang for 700 bucks, thing was beat... but after about 8 years and countless hours of work it is in mint condition and now worth about 25k.

czawada that sounds great, i'd love a project that like that if our climate was warmer and I had some spare time, have you got any photo's of yr Mustang?

Don't have a ton of experience with these cars, but my dad had a 350 SLC and a 450 SEL when I was little.
But I DO know these are quality cars, nothing like the half-assed stuff coming out of Stuttgart these days.
First, you have to ask yourself if you have the time and the money. Because a) it's going to cost you a LOT of money if it's in bad shape. Almost always more than if you had bought a mint to begin with. And second, do you have the time? A restoration project often takes years.
And you must REALLY want this, because when you can't find parts, or the unique bolts you ordered don't fit, you're going to have second thoughts and question your motivation. I've been there. I started restoring a 1998 550 Maranello last year that had been in a fire, but I gave up halfway through because I didn't have the time or the energy.
Also, If you plan to make any money off it, research what engine/options most people would want. I'm not too experienced with these, so I don't know.
Some things to look for would be parts that are expensive to replace. How much work does the engine need? Tires ok? (not a big deal for modern cars, but the dimension on old ones are usually rare and expesive.)
Not too many electric gizmos in it (thank god), but if it has A/C - does it work? If old ones don't, you usually can't fix it because they require freon gas which isn't legal anymore.
And most important - rust. check everywhere. Under floor mats, suspension, axles etc.
Oh, and GOOD LUCK! ^_^

(who actually got his first MB a few months ago!)

Thanks for the info Jox. I know its going to be headache and it's going to be plenty of work and money but I plan to take my time and do it right. It's my wifes dream car so it's more for her, not really doing it just to make a buck but more to enjoy... will be a summer fun car.
So what MB did you buy?... no more Audis? I saw a nice black 2007 RS4 this morning... beauty car, funny thing is dude was checking me out in our measly 2006 A3 2.0.
