m new to osx (been stuck in the dark ages on os9... i miss it)... any way, i have a macbookpro and am looking for a little guidance on fonts and where to find and put them!
basically i have
hard drive > library > fonts.
hard drive > system > library> fonts
james comp > library> fonts
I think that hard drive > system > library> fonts is just for system fonts so i dont need to worry about that, but the other 2 are confusing me... i have read to put fonts into hard drive > library > fonts. which is fine but there are also fonts in james comp > library> fonts.
I just want to keep it simple just now and not worry about users etc... will the programs look in all the folders? or should i streamline and place them all in one particular place?
any tips would be very very helpful indeed!
cheers

get a font management program like suitcase. There is already one in OSX called Fontbook that you will aready have, but it's a bit lame.
It doesn't really matter where you keep your fonts (apart from system fonts) I just have all my fonts in a folder called FONTS in my documents folder then I control them all from suitcase XI.I think there is a good free font manager that everyone on her recommends, called Linotype Fontexplorer:
http://www.linotype.com/fontexpl…that should do it!

I was about to install Font Explorer, but didn't know what to answer when it asked me if it should copy all fonts to its folder. Any setup/general tips?..

cool, cheers for that, i will download one of those once ive got a bit more to grips but it sounds ideal.... for just now i have moved all the fonts from james comp > library> fonts to hard drive > library > fonts. so i only have that and the system one to worry about.... it seems to have worked fine!
cheers again

james comp > library> fonts will only be available when you're logged in to that account
hard drive > library > fonts will be available to all users that log in
if your font needs are fairly simple, ie, you don't have millions of them that you're turning on/off and sorting, searching and such, you can use fontbook, which is already installed with the OS

What Baskerville said, but...
Whatever you do, don't touch the fonts in your OS X and OS 9 system/library/fonts folders.
It'll fry your system and you'll have to re-install.
(from bitter experience).

There's a good tutorial on OSX, FontBook and font locations at: http://maczealots.com/tutorials/…
btw Linotype Font Explorer works better for me too - simply a better organiser than fontbook...
