My best advice would be to save your cash until you go to korea,
I've lived there for 4 years and could only dream going back to get those high end low productions serie laptop/desktop i've seen there,
they are like a million years in future compared to what i've seen around the world (except japan)
just wait boy, if you don't find one that suits your tastes there, just get the refurb then.

Just an update... everything got here today and the refurb is perfect. No dead pixels and the case doesn't have any marks to speak of.

I just bought my first Mac ever this morning and went with the refurb because of this thread. Thanks for saving my soon to be freelance ass $500. Macbook Pro, 2.3 Intel Duo 2, 2gb ram, 120gbhd. $1999!

PS. Remember that even though some referbs are because of hardware failure.. a big number of them are simply returns to the store.
Lots of people return laptops because they changed their mind... etc. And since it is a return, by law, you are required to mark it refreb.

I bought my first ever mac... as a referb. It was a 17 inc powerbook.
It was a great computer. I recently bought new referb, 15" Macbook Pro. I gave my old one to my dad and he is still using it strong.
I havnt had any problems. I knew one guy that had a problem, but he got the problem fixed right away. Apple care is awesome.
the other great thing about referbs is you can still buy the extended warrenty which I recommend.

Oops. NO problems on his.

My bro bought refurb MBP and the metal above the release button was bent out and there was a small puncture on the screen. Apple store fixed both in in 3 days, it's been fine since.
He then bought a refurb macbook for his wife and it has had no problems whatsoever.
I bought a brand spanking new MBP and the drive was crap so I took it in. They swapped it for a new one.
My coworker bought my same spec MBP refurbed and I can't tell the difference. They both look the same. So problems on his.
Seems any purchase could have issues and so the warranty is a great thing to have.

"I know there's still the warranty, but I'd rather it just not break, or be really less likely to break, you know? "
Nothing is going to guarantee that the new one won't break. I was planning on buying a new one this weekend and have been considering the refurb all week. I'd save $500 off the bat and know it still has the same warranty.

I had an ibook a few years ago and it never had a problem, and I saved about 40%

that vaio reminds me of a apple laptop i have at home from about 1998 where you could slide your own covers on the top

i've owned a powerbook and now a macbook pro, both refurbs. great price. absolutely no problems. the macbook has a small bend next to the latch; likely the reason for the return. don't be scared.

i got my gf a refurb ipod 60gb 5gen, was worried if it'd come scratched.. turned out not only it had the whole covering replaced (it had to in order to have a new serial number engraved), but also it is brighter than mine, seems that they put one of the new screens from the 5.5gen in it.

Thanks.
+1 to everyone, except that one guy.

I know there's still the warranty, but I'd rather it just not break, or be really less likely to break, you know?
thats is why refurb is better, it's been tested for you.. simple as that

i bought a mac mini, turned out sweet.
sold it to buy a macbook & samething. although i'm not sure if the extended 3yr apple care is worth it.
again, i plan on buying the macbook.
