I like to think I combine extreme mental instability with a near total lack of creativity

Great book on the subject: In Touched with Fire: Manic Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament, Kay
Redfield Jamison explores the compelling connection between mental disorders and artistic creativity.http://www.amazon.com/Touched-Fi…
"If a man comes to the door of poetry untouched by the madness of the Muses, believing that technique alone will make him a good poet, he and his sane compositions never reach perfection, but are utterly eclipsed by the performances of the inspired madman" - Socrates

to answer more personally mjbauer: I believe the creative spirit we all possess should be viewed as a process. As designers and artists we are constantly changing, maturing, gaining experience, and creating new forms.
Due to a combination of skill and talent most designer often find themselves in stages - sometimes we're in complete execution mode, other times freelance work can dry up or one can find themselves unemployed.
If you or someone is finding themselves "less creative" then attempt to attack the skill aspect, learn a new program, work on your resume, search for gigs then you'll be forced to get back into execution mode.
Having a good friend who is bi-polar I understand what your post is stating. Often times people who get their mental issues in order have to become familiar with a whole new self, a stabilized self.

If I become any more boring and any less creative I believe I may flatline.
I am dead to myself.

i quit taking meds because I didn't like the loss of creativity and bats.

well being creative is thinking outside the norm.
crazy people think out side the norm.
so yea...
I consider myself to have the regular amount of wacky-ness
and a good balance of creativity.... But I do lack motivation to execute my creative thoughts.... which could be pinned on depression....man..
... i should have just said "yeah"

(Dec 31 06, 12:09)yes. from my experience, i find that after going through certain things that demand a new mindset you just stop being so enthusiastical as you use to. you become very cautious. but it's a good thing. you won't lose so much time with things that suddenly become irrelevant, and your work and your life gets more focused in the details that really make you happy.

I've been off my meds for a few days and I actually FEEL something right now, and it's making me want to create something. I don't get this kind of motivation when I'm on the meds. However I'm way less focused, so even though I want to create, I lack the ability to follow-through. It seems like a lose-lose situation to me.
Is there a balance?

you have a beard, mjbauer.
use it.

just do it and don't think too much about it. that's what having a beard is all about.
