I need some advice.
I need to go to Johannesburg next week and need some kind of mobile laptop connectivity. I know Vodafone do some USB card thing here in the UK, and wondered if there's anything like that over there that I can use? Using cable or the phone line is out of the question.

do you have bluetooth connection in your laptop? i am guessing you do you crazy mac-head like me.... ;)
possibly get a SIM card there for your mobile, purchase the unlimited data-transfer plan they have (i would guess ~ 25-30 euro) and conect to hypermesh via bluetooth that way?
i have done it before in south america and works well. only limiting factor is the bandwidth of the mobile provider...

is this like broadband speed?

in some places, yes. many, no.
in my experience, i have only had bband in the US, but i would not doubt that Cape Town may have that. but i get the sense you will not be in the city and such.

i don't know what south africa has for tel network. but here in the states, i can use my phone as a wireless modem and connect to my mac using bluetooth. if the country offers 3G, then it should be pretty fast.

I'd need a 3G phone though?

yo moth, we got the same vodafone service here as in the uk: http://www.vodacom.co.za/service…
you might be able to roam with your existing account, if it's not too expensive.
there's also iBurst: http://www.iburst.co.za/default.…
and Cell C: http://www.cellc.co.za/content/h…
but Vodafone has the best coverage.

No one has made a reference to, "Ask JazX", yet?
For shame.

also, if you don't need access outside of where you're staying, most hotels have wireless/broadband you activate at the desk and the pay the bill along with the room.
