Would anyone have any information regarding how a standalone Flash app caches XML data? Say it lost connection with the data source would it be able to access cached data?

I do not think it caches. Could be wrong. But all the data is stored in an array. No?

offline no xml data is cached. you could pass a variable in through javascript or loadVars to state that it's online, and if so, grab a certain version and if it's not, load a local version.

Can you overwrite that local version with new data when it is available.
This would be a public display showing content managed from admin website. When connected, it would grab the XML from that site. In cases that connection were down it would need to grab local data that is up-to-date as possible.
Also, what about caching images also managed externally? Can you force a Flash player to store them locally in case of network failure?

if the local version is on an mac or linux box, you could setup a cron job and have it grab data at certain intervals and save it to file (xml and images). then if there's sometime when the a connection isn't able to be made, it would retrieve local data and write it to the same local files.
