friend of mine brought one recently, she loves it.
you know you can do a search 'camera type' on flickr and it can show you all the photos taken on a d200. might also help you

d200 is really nice. i have a d80 and am very happy with it. if i had more money to spend, i would have bought it.

I photographer I work with said the photos are pretty soft, so I'm wondering if I might like the d80 better

(Dec 19 06, 15:18)I did not know that. ACE! :D
Thanks for the responses.
Ebay seems to be the place to get one, and I'm guessing after Christmas. Have been watching the prices for a while now (maybe a month or so) and they seem to be dropping - hopefully after Christmas they'll go even lower. (I'm hoping for around $1200 Australian)

I got one of the first ones.. and I love it- I replaced my D100 with it, and as long as you use a proper lens, and shoot raw, you can't beat it for the price... there are some great rebates and xmas deals on it, and I would def recommend it to anyone... (just get the grip with the extra batteries!!)

I have one. I love it. If you're more of a casual user, or don't have the coin for the D200, go with the D80. It has most of the same features, but is cheaper and has a plastic body. The D200 is all magnesium, weather proofed externals (lens, connectors and doors are all sealed with o-rings) and is a physically bigger camera.
Get the 18-70 lens as a kit, then save up for the better glass.
As for the people who claim that its not sharp, bullshit. These are not pro photographers and don't understand this camera or pro cameras. It is NOT a consumer camera, especially when you shoot raw with it. The D200 doesn't have high in-camera sharpening values by default. That's up to the user. It will do you NO favors if you don't know how to properly expose an image. The raw files that it captures are truly that: raw. They're made to be post processed, sharpened, saturated and converted to whatever file type you want.
If you're looking for something that's a good SLR but is more of a consumer "point and shoot" go with the D50. It takes amazing jpegs out of the box.
