i got an external drive for my birthday the other day and im starting to set it up. now, the reason i got it was to house all the songs i currently have on my mac which i think is slowing it down. im a little nervous to transfer them over and then delete them off the hard drive.
my ultimate plan is to have them on the external drive and then load all the songs into itunes and have them play off the external drive (i know i have to switch off the option of copying the files to the hard drive). what is the best way to go about this?

be careful. I did this a few years ago and lost 100 gigs of music. It was my fault, I thought I had already copied it over and I tossed out my music files. I was bummed out but a year of FMT and now I've got pleanty of music.
I think if you reinstall itunes it will ask you if you want it to search your HD for music. I'd do that.

yeah, i think i might burn all my mp3's on to a bunch of dvd's and then try the switch just to be sure.

not all that complicated...
just copy all the mp3s to your external, wipe everything previously in your itunes library (select all, option delete), and just drag and drop your entire collection back onto the library inside itunes.
you can delete the mp3s on your OSX disk whenever you feel safe that it all copied over smooth.
you can also point itunes to the external as location of new library (prefs/ advanced) if you want itunes to manage your files.

if you hold while you click and open iTunes it will ask you to select your library.

iTunes preferences, under advanced tab, select your library there, . . .

this postbox removed my formatting!
it was supposed to say if you hold down the OPTION key while you open iTunes...

ok, finished it. thanks for the help everyone, its working fine (except for the fact that i lost all my playlists, but im over it).
i decided to delete all the music from my hard drive except for those artists/albums i couldnt do without if the external hard drive fucked up. and, thats not taking up any space on my comp compared to everything else. booya.

Is reinstalling iTunes the only way to get it to search for mpfree's? If so - that sucks. If not, I suck for not finding this command.
