Dear comrades, I need your help in quoting a job for a client. Project consists of complete magazine design. Teh client has been working previously with an agency - that's a plus because it means he's use to high rates. It is a 100 page editorial and client assumes all print costs and provides ads. Also, client publishes about four to six mags per year. How much would you guys quote a job like this for and do you have any suggestions or links for specific contracts since this could be a big paying account?
Thanx.

sounds like a nice gig.

I kno, I really want to get it. Taht's why I need some help.
please?

are you responcible for account management, PM and design/AD? if so;
1) get ready to stock of on ant-acid
2) get ready for a nice retainer rate

I would charge to do a quote like that.
but basically you want to charge for the initial design (ie; setting up the grid/format/type styles etc) as a one off job, then the cost would be lower per each follow on issue.

thanks mad, the client will provide ads, so I'll work on correcting and placement. My brother will manage the project, but yeah, I'm ready for this! hopefully ;)

Any suggestions for retainer?

Good luck man, have you layed out a mag before?

np.
so then, you will not be 'designing' the layout, aesthetic, or art directing the thing? more like a maintaining the design and being responcible for the design of each new issue that comes out? no problem with that clearly, just clarifying.
i would think a monthly retainer of something around $10k would be reasonable, unless you are talking about some mag we all know and see everyday on the stand.... and then we are talking *much* different numbers.
outside of that, i would think that would cover all updates and production of the project, and for each feature design and layout/AD it would fall under an hourly starting at ~$100/hr. again, unless there is a rate already established, or if for mag print world, rates are much more formulaic.
good luck, mang.

thanks man. I was thinking of a min of $100/hour also but wasn't sure about the retainer. Does anybody have a copy or link of a contract I could use for this type of project? thnx again.

find out how much the agency charged and cut it down to some percentage of that
- madirish0
and then scrap all that and do what Rand said. it is how bids are truly won. just ask him- he steals them all the time....
one.

bump.
Does anybody have a copy or link of a contract I could use for this type of project? thnx again.

Yes, ask for $100 an hour so I can see them laugh in your face.

"Boy you’re really doing a bang-up job of talking yourself out of this project."
