Hello fellow NTers. I need some help. I just met this girl about a month ago at a McDonalds...
advertising seminar. We've been keeping in contact, and even showed each other our work a few days ago.We were talking and she told me she'd love to have me design her website, once she has her stuff ready, and I said I could.
This would be the first time I've charged someone. Everything I've read on the internet tells me I should charge her, but I still feel weird about it. I already said I could do it, but that doesn't imply anything does it? I have a feeling this is gonna suck, but I figure if I don't start now I'll be making excuses for a while. Should I charge her hourly or by the project, and how much should I charge?
And this isn't my first website, I've made about three variations of my portfolio (which two were never published, and one is finished and about to go online), and I've made it about halfway through a website that changed owners, but was looking good when they told me to abandon it. Wow this is long. Any advice at all?

or perhaps charge an intern rate or just slightly higher

you shouldn't give things for free. there should at least be an exchange of service.
no one appreciate free wares.

Yeah do a per project price. You cannot be expected to work days/weeks on a project and not get anything for it.
At least charge her what you were getting per hour at McDonalds
;)

has she 'kept in touch' for the fact she wants to be your friend? (maybe more!) or the fact she'd like to be your client?
if its the friend answer (or more) then if the sites literally only gonna take you a couple of nights work then do it for an exchange (esp if she's hot!) tell her youl build her a site if she takes you out to dinner one night to somewhere swanky and gets you drunk.
i've done a wee flash site for a girl friend under those terms before.
if shes just interested in being a client and you still think shes hot then do her a good price and make sure you have lots of relaxed client meetings in places like chilled bars lol.
if you think shes interested in being a client and shes NOT hot, then just give her a usual cost

Haha! now that's professionalism! I heart this place!

PeterH nailed it.
The truth hurts.

Will this be a long-term relationship or just a one-off job? Will she want you to update her site regularly? If you are gonna use XHTML, make sure you practice safe PHP.
Oh and charge by the hour.

don't worry. everything you are going through is normal. i was there too not so long ago, but now i say fuck working for free unless its an awesome project for close friends/family.
you need to charge, but you need to charge what you're worth...don't get in the habit of doing work for free. trust me, it sucks. and it also devalues the work of our industry.
- OSFA0
I agree!
I always charge up front.Sx: $30
Fetish: $50
- tkmeister0
being a client fucker is more noble than being a model fucker.
make sure you get paid though.
