How useful is it to design using DIVs rather than using TABLEs?
Using DIV tags take much longer than TABLE tags. Is it worth the trouble?

I use CHAIR tags myself...

Its worth it but if your not familiar CSS then will take some time.

CSS is not the problem.
I'm just trying to find out how more robust is DIV tags then TABLE tags.

well you can do more or less everything you need with divs and not so much with tables.

just use divs. i avoided it forever because i never used them, but it's actually a lot easier than trying to use tables.

it's easier in the long run. it's also much cleaner, which means less clutter to sort through.
i swear by it.

CSS is the way to go, but there were quite a few very usable features in tables that were recklessly abandoned in tableless css, ie:
- good control over vertical alignment inside cells,
- horizontal cells width autostretching,
- equal height autostretch column.Basically, the solid yet elastic grid tables provided has no matching replacement in tableless CSS. But hey, life goes on, CSS7 might be good.

what are you looking to display?
general content or a tabular content?
I think the answer is in the question.

Divs PWNS Tables.
I'm finally convincing everyone at work, it took me like 2 years.

Use whatever the situation calls for. DIVs are super flexible and cleaner to look at, which is a huge bonus. Our new site launched and the developers totally jerked the dog when it came to laying the site out. It's just fuckin' tables all over the damn place and it's a royal headache cleaning their (expensive) mess up. I'll never be able to totally clean it up because I might as well start from scratch. Food for thought.

digilee,
I'm displaying images and text with image MAPS (I hate image MAP).
We have tested the page and have found that the page coded with DIV tags has less K-bytes than the page coded with tables.
But the weird thing is that the DIV page takes longer to load.
:(

divs can have some interactivity, like hyde/show, auto-scroll, etc.
