The client was a file putting on a CD and so it boots up automatically when you put the cd in the drive...
They client is governmental so they cant be seen to be spending LOADS of money on it...
What they have asked for is:
A simple flash page with single button navigation that in certain secttions when you click (get this) IT OPENS A PPT file!?!?!
or plays a movie
movie part is simple...
Can you launch PPT in flash??
I dont know why the fuck you would ever want to do that!?!?!
Should I do it as a interactive PDF?!?!?
How you you tackle it!?!?
Please help

Why don't you go to the client and offer the better solution.
You gotta push these ideas or you'll just end up churning out the same old shite.

why has it to launch a PPT file? has that already bveen created likes?
why not just create the presentation in flash?
doesnt flash 8 have slideshow feature? ive not used it yet so dunno how it works though, but doesnt it simplify the process and offer something like PPT?

Cheers for getting back digilee
The problem is...
I have already done that...
How it works with these guys is that they are STILL changing the fucking PPT after its been burned to CD!!
I offered to do it all in flash but then they have to get there copy etc done quicker
WHICH WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!
They cant use flash so would shit themselves that they arent in control and can change it when they want...
Is it really doable what they have requested??

i hate powerpoint. I think the idiots who invented it had a good idea but subsequently the idiots who use it think it's the dog's bollocks and use it for everything from dull corporatepresentations, to wedding photo slide shows. We need another office software system as Microsoft suck.

you coul use director - easier to launch app from - but then you'd need Director skills.
You may be able to launch ppt in explorer by using GETURL in flash to web page which contains the ppt. That's how I would launch the pdfs to, if you want to do it quickly.
Otherwise its the FS COMMAND - you could look at zinc:
But again it's not a simple/cheap solution.

i can't understand all the hatred around ppt - it's a nice app for presentations that runs everywhere. not everybody has to be a graphic nerd (thank god!).

sorry to be thick guys but CAN YOU ACTUALLY tell flash to open a ppt file!?!?
Not within flash - obviuosly...

how about having a link and the ppt opens? i can't see your problem...

I think there are security issues with flash opening up applications, especialy on the web. So look into the flash security sandbox.
For standalone apps, it might be a different story and I remember opening apps from flash using FS command.

Use the getURL function with the ppt file as the address. Alternatively, create an html page with nothing in it which then usses javascript to open a ppt presentation (in web browser). It's the only way flash can communicate with other applications for security reasons.
Otherwise, as I said it's zinc/MDM or director.

you used to ba able to write a bat file to go onto the cdrom and run that from with flash. the bat file then opens the file (PPT0 and forces the program associated with it to open it.
contents of yr bat
START yrfile.pptthis should be in yr fscommand folder
