ive been importing midi files i've found online for complete songs into cubaseSX then trying to assign virtual VST instruments to each channel so i can in effect "remix" the songs.
BUT when i hit play and it gets to the start of each channel (as it starts) it switches to some default instrument setting.
how oh how so i switch this off so i can set it (and keep it on) the new instrument setting i want to set it to.
this is doing my head in!! ive nearly thrown my laptop across the room! lol
help greatly appreciated!

if you look at the events list for the track, you should see a program change as the first event, delete it!

I think its an issue of not selecting the right instrument inside your VSTI, check if the track names has something like BASS / Lead / Guitar / Horns, etc then look inside the right VSTI for the RIGHT (or closer sound)

uh, no. it's a GM file, GM files have program change commands embedded in each track to select the proper instruments. you need to delete those program changes or it will always try to change the sound regardless of what instrument you have assigned to it.

how do i get 'in' to change those embedded commands?i figured it was something like that cos yeah itl only let me select like 'strings' for string parts of the song etc.
before i posted that up id been searching everywhere in cubase for a wee tickbox or instruction commands that controlled which instrument it was but to no avail. i had had a few wines though so maybe that wasnt helping.
any tips on how to egt rid of the embed command would be a great help. how do i get 'in'?
im gonna try searching google just now too.
