Saw it last night, brilliant remake, the Scorsese's back on form.

Agreed. Though I have to admit I found the last 20 minutes very Tarantinoesque. can't decide if that's a criticism or not. Strong performances all round with perhaps the possible exception of Mark Wahlberg who I though verged a bit on playing it for laughs. Alec Baldwin had the best line of the movie though when they were practising their golf.
It's definitely the best Scorcese in a long time though. 4/5

sort of know what you mean about that last 20 mins, but is that really tarantino style? or maybe somthing Tarantino took from Scorsese in the first place.

best movie in a long time, thats the way it goes.

I saw it last night as well..very good...I might actually have to become a fan of DeCaprio now. I can actually take him seriously..fantastic role..Matt Damon, not so much...

yeah ok. i am not a film critic so much as a muisc critic. but this sort of film type always has the same actors in them! matt damon, leo di caprio, etc. then you cast the older guys: chris walken, de niro, nicholson. same with the women actors: it's just a bit obvious that is all. so many actors and they do that, like designers with helvetica and times/univers etc. siborg ;(

I really enjoyed watching the movie but in retrospect so many things bug me about it. Matt Damon's character was so flat; no chemistry between him and his gf. I thought a real opportunity was lost there in letting us see any emotion and conflict in Damon's character.
I also thought Nicholson's character was one dimensional. We're supposed to believe that he was able to seduce this kid into his fold? I didn't see the charisma.
Dicaprio was great...and I have been committed to not liking him so it's hard for me to say. :)
And what happened to the girlfriend?

That was the thing though about damons character, he lacked any morale judgement. so no conflict.

I don't know..Matt Damon is becoming more like the 'Thinking man's Keanu" for me...just seems vacant all the time. Sure, mor epurposely vacant than keanu, but vacant nonetheless...
And I don't think Nicholson has played the mob thing before, has he?

oh! and the girl had a great ass... i really didn't see that one coming

The scene with Nicholson throwing the coke was awesome, brief as it was.."Don't move until your numb, baby.."

Great Movie money well spent superb filming / acting

i liked infenal affairs better.. but i shouldnt be comparing anyways

Good stuff. The excessive headshot thing reminds of his gore in Last Temptation of Christ and of course Jack dies in the Christ pose.

i think that was to only mob movie that made me forget it wasn't real. I was happily pissed at the end.
was jack's girlfriend the daughter he questioned in the soda shop during the prelude?

"I know you pulled that job at the Dedham Mall!"
Sorry, that's the mall closest to me and I didn't see that one coming out of Leo's mouth in a million years.
But, fantastic movie! Seen it twice already. Second time around I was able to notice the subtle things Scorsese threw in. During the beginning, they never showed Jack's face. He was always shadowed. The first time you see his face is when he leans in and delivers the line that sets up the movie: "When you were a kid you were told you could become a cop or a criminal. But, when you're facing a loaded gun, (lean's into the light) what's the difference?" Awesome.
I do think the girl in the beginning was Jack's girl later on. They share that little laugh towards to end of the scene in the store which seems to signify it.
And, monkeyshine, it is implied at the end that Damon's girl tipped off Wahlberg. Because a little bit before Leo hands her the envelope that he says not to open unless anything happens. My question, though, is that he shows up to her and Damon's apartment to drop off that envelope to her, then later he mails Damon the CD recording. Didn't he know it was the same apartment and that she was, in fact, dating him?
Regardless, the movie was brilliant. I'd say one of the best this decade. Every performance was strong (I thought Wahlberg and Baldwin especially). Scorsese did an incredible job, more so than his other movies. There wasn't really a time when the camera went crazy. You couldn't even recognize it was one of his other than the blatant violence. He just made the movie flow very smoothly. The soundtrack was exceptional as well.
All in all, a must see. And, the don't even butcher the accent that much either (save for a few times with the girlfriend)!

Awesome movie. Saw it twice. I'm a big fan of Scorsese...just seems his stuff is always done well. And it's nice to see him do present day pics.
Put this one up there with Little Miss Sunshine for best movies of the year.

i just saw Infernal Affairs. I'm gonna wait till that's not so fresh in the dome before i see the Departed incase there a lot of the same plot twists.
Infernal Affairs was great though.

Alec Baldwin stole the movie...his best performance in a long time.

Bette Midler was fabulous.
