"People can live without design"
I said this is untrue for these reasons: without design there is no progress, no decisions made, no way to communicate ideas and thoughts (in a meaningful and clear way, at the very least) to huge amounts of people. There is no way to shape thoughts into something everyone can see. We need to shut our mouths about "graphic design" and what we think it is. People that act are far more admirable than those that simply sit in the corner and say "fuck off, I'm the real deal" (not that the PBS link does this). It is our job to find ways of speaking to people, what you choose to speak about is your decision and that is the hard part. Saying that "all design is fucked because I'm frustrated with my life in advertising" is just lame and weak. Get some spine. Examples of "design" that people could not live without: Look at what the designing of writing did to civilization, look at what the invention of the letterpress did for the history of writing. Scientists design tests all the time in order to discover new things and push our understanding in technology and medicine. If you don't want to operate in this culture, move to Burma or remote Canada (the fact that conglomerates are polluting these areas, or will do at some point, is another issue all together).
Just because there is a gap between the everyday work we see for Nutella and Adidas and that of work which has real human impact and an affect on the way we see the work is frustrating, doesn't mean it cannot be done. You cannot make a profound statement in a clothing advert. YOU NEED TO FIND A WAY TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE and have real feeling in what you're saying. I'm seeing you give no other suggestions than "fuck design, lets get money from the corporations". DO SOMETHING TO ACT ON THIS STATEMENT, IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT, RATHER THAN LEAVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE. If you have examples of this work I'd love to see it.-G

And I whole heartedly agree with you on your opinions about typography and it's inner celebrated culture. It's important, but no more important than the type of foundation a woman uses to wear in the morning. It's part of a whole.
I even did this recently for a quick 1 hour college brief:

design, in general, is to plan with a specific purpose or intention in mind.

design is the intermediary between the audience and those who are trying to communicate - good design clearly articulates the message to be conveyed.

Design in most cases makes everything look better. The thing sucks about it, is not design itself I guess, it is the work sucks big time, work sucks in any ways, whatever it is. I like to do many things but I don't wanna do any of those for 9 hours a day...I even don't wanna see my girlfriend 9 hours a day...geezz...gimme a brake world
