talk to them first - make it more informal and it'll be less of a blow to them - shows that you respectthem enough to give them a heads up and treat them as friends and not just employers.

maybe give them more notice than yr contract states and help them to get a good replacement for yrself. if thats possible :D

Tell your boss you'd like a chat, tell him face to face and hand him your letter. If they have treated you well then do it face to face.

We all have to move on sometime. Nothing wrong with it. Just be honest and upfront. Talk to them first before sending in the formal letter.

I have my letter of resignation and hand it to them while doing it face to face. If you hand it to them and then talk about it, it's official. But be prepared for them to try and make a counter offer. And be sure your ok with them saying, ok, well then get the fuk out. no 2 weeks for you.
