Poor guy is a victim of his own success?
Do people feel betrayed when stuff they considered niche and private to them and the 'congiscenti', then begins to go mainstream?

glad to see there is intelligent mainstream

I'm glad banksy is getting a larger audience. But I used to like that my day was brightened up by some of his stencils around town, there was an elegant subtlety to them, a quiet two fingers up.
Then he got into staging events, which to me are a bit too 'look at me' when he isn't making the most profound statements. Now he's gone to hollywood and is showing his work to a bunch of people who won't get it.

"...and is showing his work to a bunch of people who won't get it." maybe they start to use their brains after?

I was awoken by this news on BBC Radio 4 this morning.
Grannies up and down the country will now be going out and buying the Banksy coffee table book - maybe even going out and creating their own witty and wistful guerilla art.
Brighton and Hove - watch out.

"The organisers have said Cameron Diaz, Colin Farrell and Orlando Bloom are all expected to attend."
see the thing with banksy is, he is unashamedly a self promoting, hypocrit really, which is funny. Having been to several of his previous shows I wouldn't really be interested to attend, purely because his work is largely poorly crafted and looks wrong out of context. Plus, his shows basically aren't very good, the joy was always the stencils in sneaky places that would just creep up on you.
Someone like Barry McGee who has a much more active history as an actual graffiti artist, much stronger grass roots within the 'real' scene, who actually creates work which is beautifully painted and puts on amazing conceptual installation shows is much more my cup of tea, and while he is extremely successful and in demand, he has managed to 'keep it real'
Barry McGee basically owns.

i haven't had the luck to see any of Barry McGee's or banksy's pieces. but what is so wrong if an artist with ideas get's a bibber chance?
- rasko40
I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm saying I personally am not so interested anymore. I consider it to be amusing 'pub art' which is fine, don't get me wrong, I own a banksy piece.
There is an irritating tendency on NT for people to take any form of comment that isn't entirely positive as some kind of 'hating' when often, it is merely discourse.

pascii, it contradicts the original message of his work.
Its like Peter Saville using Comic Sans for the Manchester re-brand
- pascii0
there has to be much more to think anyone hates something for me ; )
you won't believe, but that whole streetart (?) message thing is so new for me because you don't see these things here.
* pascii, it contradicts the original message of his work. *
that's true. hmm.

"...overall theme of global poverty and injustice.
..the event opens to the public on Friday following an invitation-only, celebrity launch party."
lets hope the celebs club together and get Nathan ... i mean ... Banksy ... some new paints so he can carry on his good work for us, the public.

street art owns...
grab a tin of paint and go put a message on somewhere smart!

(Sep 14 06, 04:19)i know what? i should have done that before i've become an 30yrs-old-advertising-whore!

Its good that Banksy is communicating a political message and if has to use Cameron Diaz, Colin Farrell and Orlando Bloom to help well so be it. But it could seem he is going a bit celeb.
Heat magazine next?

the west bank barrier stuff was brilliant. i don't mind -no wait, i applaud- someone being an attention whore if it serves a legitimate purpose.
it's easy to be jealous of someone succeeding on their own terms.

ok, with his art he slates paris hilton yet invites Cameron Diaz, Colin Farrell and Orlando Bloom to the opening night.
hypocrite!
he's just as much of a media whore these days as paris is.
wonder what the 'painted elephant' has to say about this artists that pulls cunning stunts
