So I have this globe drawn with gradients on it, nothing too complex, and twice on reopening the gradients have dissapeared and one of them has turned into one of the standard 'chrome' look ones or something?
WTF?

accidently saved in a lower version?

I was getting a message saying 'cannot copy, not enough memory' which is bollocks. So i just save normally, reboot illy and it opens all fucked.

have you tried checking your tasks - maybe there's something thats eating up a lotta memory (maybe a exploit/virus) or it could just be that some memory remained unflushed form other programs - :) restart computer

is it a freehand file?

check the apearance palate in case there is a hidden fill under the gradient.

not a freehand file, though there was element that I drew in freehand and pasted in as an eps, but that is just real simple and wasn't affected. Its basically just one circle so it's easy to revert, it's just rather annoying and unnerving. It happened exactly the same the other day, replacing my radial grad with this default linear 'chrome' grad.

Wow, never had any errors like that. Maybe reboot, remake all elements in only illustrator and or delete preferences. I'm thinking that the freehand imported element might be stressing out illustrator. From what I've read AI and FH use different algorithms to create shapes. A couple years ago I had to recreate everything I did in illustrator in freehand to make a flash file run smoother...more native imported file type. Good luck!
