My friends go to Nosara every year. It's only 2.5 hours drive if you fly into Liberia, which is key. Pretty uncrowded waves, plenty of breaks to choose from. Inexpensive hotels footsteps away from the beach:

Never been but my buddies have and they had a blast. Surely you will too. Also I think they smoked a lot of weed down there.

it's awesome.
we took a 5 hour cab ride to tamarindo, it was like $60 or something,
then cruised down to mal pais, then took a ferry over to jaco, then rented a car and went up to the volcano, it was bitchin.
lots of tourists :(, lots of surfing:).

It's great. Be prepared mentally for more rain than you can imagine.
Here's my vacation pics from March.

Thanks for the responses. I'll be flying into Liberia and heading straight for the coast, so looks like Nosara's in order. From there I'll be going South, hitting up surf and making my way to the rainforests and National Parks for some treking through the jungle.
Thanks all for the tidbits - keep 'em coming! I'm getting all fuzzy thinking about it!

I worked there for 3 months and stayed mostly on the pacific ... head up to tamarindo and check out all of the beaches of guanacaste (northern pacific region). go to tabacon hot springs (tico park on one side, resort on the other - go to the resort if you're bringin a lady friend). jaco is close to san jose, but also most crowded. i;d rent a jeep for the week as travel is slow on buses and taxis ... be on the lookout for washed out roads since its the rainy season.

Spend extensive time in their National Park system. It is arguably the best in the world:
