What are the pros and cons for an alias or "studio" name vs. using your own name for a portfolio site? Not where you're pretending to be a company, but for personal sites, ala iso50, wonderland, etcl.
- emptyempty0
it's just name, right? you can have both "studio" and your own name, all point to the same site

i named my portfolio 'adaugeo' as sort of an under the radar way of being a total egomaniac. but, the con is that its hard to pronounce (ah-daj-ee-oh), hard to spell and hard to give out for my email.
- johnnyonthespot0
How is that name egomanical? And, assuming it were available, why would or wouldn't you use "matthewcoates.com" (or somesuch)?
Thanks!
ps: nice work, esp the illustrative stuff.
- mattyd040
thanks for the compliments.
but, 'adaugeo' means 'to make great' in latin. so, a hint of megalomania there. but, at least i admit it.
though, i dont think id use my name as my portfolio address. id rather use that to point to a site that was about me, rather than my work. yknow? like a blog or something like that.

Just remove the vowels and it's a done deal. +10 cool.

I used to be Matt Steel Design, but until I'm famous or have a bunch of employees, I am known as Metagramme Studio.
Pro: it's a talking point, people ask what it means ('Big Picture')
Con: a lot of people pronounce it Meta-grammy, which drives me nuts. What I get for trying to be Olde English...
:/

Good timing on this post. I am currently struggling with the EXACT same thing!
I'm tired of my current name (which doesn't really translate to older folks), but can't really use my full name because its too hard to spell.
I tried for a few days to think of a good "studio" name, but then gave up and just registered "designedbyevan.com"
Not great but in the end its just a name.

haha, i am sure it will "appeal" to "some" older folks hehehe..

hahaha i am actually really laughing here, which is rare, usually i post like i laugh but hardly do, but your company name keeps me snickering now..
hehehe

haha..yeah chalk it up as a youthful mistake. I'm older and its time to move on. I plan on using that domain for my artwork and non-portfolio stuff

with a person name, you will always appear to be one person. even if you have employees. which can be good, and can be bad.
if you use studio, collective, etc, you look bigger. but do not be all fake and makeyouself look really big. no stock photographs of a woman on a phone please.

I just use my name http://www.philipregan.com - though I really wanted philregan.com as only my mother retains the right to call me Philip. Unfortunately that had gone to some guy called 'Phil Regan'.
I'm thinking of registering speccygit though as I always use my glasses as a graphic design.

I like using a studio name because my name is hard to pronounce, and you'd be suprised how fast people get annoyed when you correct them on how to pronounce your name. My name's also not easy to remember how to spell.

i prefer my name as well...
i also have a couple others holding onto inclase i need to go with a more studio sounding name.

I had the same trouble recently.
You want something with logevity taht also reflects the charcteristics of your style and design priciples.
Concrete was taken by two big firms, one in Canada and Chicago. So I racked my brains for weeks trying to think of something suitable. In the end I have come back to Concrete because there isn't one in the uk and my work is very different to the other big studios with the same name.
Here's some I didn't use:
'Studious' (also Studio Us)
'Bridge'
'Upside'
'Push'
'Dwell'
'Nuvo'

Currently I'm using real name, but I'm working on my new site now. morework.org.
I just got kinda sick of using my name, but I've had it forever. I'll be keeping both.
