100% CSS height.
http://www.d1plc.com/news.phpWhy wont my white box stretch huh? I don't think there's anything wrong with my method, but something's braking it.
- PonyBoy0
not sure why it's doing this... but I tried resizing my browser and refreshed your page... it seems that the white box is sizing to the browser's height and not the content height.
- moth0
it does the same in IE7 and FF.
at least it's consistent...bah.

is consistentcy of content the most difficult aspect to achieve with web design thru all the browsers??
or is this something just gone thru in the end processes??
is web design today drawn around the browsers and how they allow content to be viewed??
if so is this a hinderance in your design creative process??

i was asking a serious question, i am outside of the web design world, i find it interesting...
i can see why people who are in the web field get "consistently" pissed off by comments such as yours when they are simply asking a direct and mature question.

welcome back. sounds like you're not loving it so much. missing new york?

e-pill - Yes, it can be extremely frustrating trying to ensure consistency across net media.
In many ways, it's not as bad as it used to be - Netscape's demise, better Mac browsers and increased CSS compliance make things a bit easier. We also appear to be at the top of the aesthetic/usability arc, as the web's been around for a while longer so users' vocabulary is somewhat increased and their expectation moderated.
However, things'll probably start getting complicated again as we increasingly move over to mobile/tv devices (though HDTV and no WebTV will help :)
This all falls apart when you start using strict CSS to dictate form - but that's surmountable.
Anyway, i'm going to have a joint in your honour now - t'raa.

moth im sorry you are right, but i was just asking about design processes as i am always impressed with your work ...i was just wondering how your design process gets you to where you are in the end finished product.

Have you tried 115% height for your container div?
With some of this:html,body {
height: 100%;
}Not W3C n' all that though.

moth is a grumpy bastard.
some say it's part of his charm.

Moth,
Best way to figure out errors is to comment out all extraneous code and work your way up until you figure out what's causing the error. Seems like there is some unnecessary code in your 'container' id. You should define your font-family in your body for one. You've got all these width hacks as well that don't seem necessary. Stop with the margin-left-right-top bottom stuff and use just margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px; (top right bottom left) to simplify a bit. Seems like a float problem.
- normal0
oh yeah, and don't bother with height: 100%. Doesn't work cross browser.
- moth0
i swear this worked before various FF updates.
I'll try what you said normal.

is consistentcy of content the most difficult aspect to achieve with web design thru all the browsers??
A) Nope, pretty easy if you know what you're doing even in strict XHTML. Without hacks even.
or is this something just gone thru in the end processes??
A) It's a part of the process.
is web design today drawn around the browsers and how they allow content to be viewed??
A) Nope, anything is possible.
if so is this a hinderance in your design creative process??
A) see above. The only thing hindering you is yourself and maybe the claws of the zeitgeist.
Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about or is out of their depth. Sure i've spent a day trying to figure out one tiny CSS problem that doesn't work in all browsers but I've never encountered a problem that can't be solved.

thanks!!
