I am considering to switch from permalance to staff position. the pay is better as freelance, of course.
but if i want to climb up the corporate ladder and have a career, i need to switch over. i should just suck the pay cut and hope for better future...
what you think?

employment is only worth it if you get insurance hook ups. other than that taking a pay cut to have a boss sounds cRaZy! (imo)

i can't imagine myself being a freelancer when i am 40. i'd rather be a CD.

i think you answered your own question then. Unless you can become a CD or something better rather quickly.

at 40 you have all your contacts, clients, reputation already set up and your the CEO and CD.
just my thoughts...

Your also the first to get cut if times get tough. The work will go to the inhouse person if the comapny is worth anything.

(Aug 16 06, 10:56)how old are you? i'm 29 and to be doing client design on any level when i'm 40 isn't something i ever thought i wanted to do.
I'm using design as a way to express myself freely, live my own life, have my own schedule, not have a "dead end job", and financially secure a future for myself by funding other endeavors along the way that I hope will occupy my time in the future as they come to fruition.
A plan as to the future you have in mind will better help you decide which path you wish to take to get there.
many times along my 9-10 year journey have i rethought not staying "employed" or finding a better "studio" or even getting a design degree from a "reputable" institution
had i taken that path, the extra time wouldn't have devised the path i wished to take and follow instead would have been engulfed in corporate design. not knowing if that is the life i wanted to live now would have ever even existed
i want to retire by 40, so I can't get caught up with hours, employers and such.
You only live at the level you think at.
Put alot of thought into it, talk to your dads dad about it if possible, he's alot more like you than you know
Good luck.

it depends on your character and your ability to navigate the internal workings and politics of a company.
I've always liked the idea of freelancing but I work more efficiently and effectively as a full time worker.
A friend recently returned to freelancing after a few months full time. she hated the bickering and bitching which happened but then that might not happen with your position.

i actually enjoy the challenge of corporate design and providing creative solutions to business/marketing problems.
the company i am at is huge. it's well worth multi billion dollars. work is good and i get to work with so many different brands. also hour is great. nothing like many other big ad agencies.
10k paycut after taking everything into account. i guess i should nagotiate and see what they say.

I'm transitioning from fulltime to freelance over the next couple weeks. Most of the work that comes in is by word of mouth, but I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on how to go about placing bids.
The one thing I've learned about working fulltime is that those 8 hours are the most valuable, productive hours that you have all day - and by giving them to someone else, you're taking them from yourself.
