OK, so Im working away in flash 8 OSX on a really crappy project, have it saved, export the swf no probs. Then I go to publish the swf with a HTML page.
Flash crashes.
I reopen flash go to 'open recent' nothing there. Go to look for source files and find two swfs with nearly the same name but no fla.Now Im fine if the client doesn'y want changes but Im screwed if they do. Is there any way of reimporting the swf without it just producing keyframes?
Has anyone seen this before? Or have I just managed to kill flash?

I've seen stuff like this (FLA's go missing) when working with files off a network/server. In that case nothing you can do.
There are a few decompilers out there that arn't too bad at converting your SWFs back to FLAs. You'll probably have to tweak/redo about 40% of your work to get it all perfect again (depending on how you built it).

Err you can act professional and have a backup systemanimatedgif

Why don't you just make the HTML page with Dreamweaver or better yet, import it using SWFObject?

Oh bugger. Yeah I was working off a server, and it just went kaput.
Have to take a look at those decompilers now, the animation was pretty basic, mostly on the timeline and no AS so maybe it won't be that bad...
Bugger bugger bugger.

your server is haunted

Here are two decompilers. The latest version of Sothink's product seems to work the best but Etima's product is good too.

Hey thanks for those spot13, I had a look and downloaded a few but the fun thing is, Im on a Mac and most of em are for PC. Damn Bill Gate's oily hide!
I got a demo of one which creates a grayscale fla file. weird. Also the ones Ive tried have lost all the motion tweens and replaced em with keyframes. Im here biting my nails (inbetween typing) hoping that the client dowsn't need changes...

ian, i've got sothink at my house, i can decompile it for you when i head home for lunch if you want.
That way you can see how well it works without waisting yer $$$$.
I've had flash do the same thing. Don't work off the network. Always local. Sothink has saved a ton of time. You'll lose the names of the library items but it should run ok.
Just let me know

For ma you can use swf to fla but you must purchase it in order to get rid of the gray graphic issue. Their is also a program called gordon and they just released a new version. What I do on my mac is use virtual pc and often use Action Script Viewer or the sothink app and bring it back to mac afterwards.

Joyride that would be deadly! I can email you a link for the swf or send it to you. Whatever is handy for you...
Don't have virtual PC on me Mac, didnt want to sully it! Now Im rethinking my position on PC's especially when it comes to flash.
Cheers for the help!

yeah, email me the swf is easiest.
You'll have it by 1 EST.
No problems, glad to help

If you want to convert SWF to FLV video, or if you are looking for a video converter from SWF to FLV, this SWF to FLV Converter is the ideal one. It can perfectly convert all sorts of SWF files to FLV videos, so that you can upload them to YouTube and share with others.
