Good? Bad? Visited a few times and it seemed cool. I'm getting tired of the East Coast, so looking for a change of pace.

I asked a similar question last week, and didn't get many responses. I'm looking into relocating there as well this winter. Where you located now?

NYC area (Jersey City). The lease for my loft is up at the end of January and I miss having little things like a yard.
Portland looks great, so I was hoping to hear from anyone that lives or has lived there. I've lived in Albuquerque, SoCal, and NYC; now I'm looking for an Albuquerque-type place that has green things. Portland looked like a good option.

I have lived there and am living right outside of there right now in an awesome town called Hood River.
Number 1 outdoor life city in the nation.Portland is an awesome town. One of my faves, and actually has one of the largest progressive young populations. Big scene. The area is beautiful, the downtown is great, and the people are nice and the area is clean. Close the mountains, close to the beaches... great all around.

arthurHi arthur,
Just doing a general inquiry about the town. Figured some NTers could give good/bad insight beyond the brief trips I've been on.
Looks like a great place to live. Any thoughts on the good and/or bad?

tarageeNow that Trump is building crap over here they have street sweepers for the crack heads. I'm starting to miss the neighborhood flavor.
Gentrification = time to move.

Hey all, just like ryoshu, I'm looking to move to portland this fall/winter. Any advice on the job opportunities/market (jr. designer still paying his dues) would be greatly appreciated!
thanks! wes

i was there for uni and it's a fantastic city. doesn't get much more gentrified than portland, though, as the entire place is on a permanent gentrification and regentrification loop thanks to the growth boundary.
great music, lots of good restaurants and even a decent smattering of cultural stuff for a town that size.
the job market was shit when i left, but that was back in ought-one, and i've heard that it's much improved now.
go! go! it's ace! you'll love it!

I've lived in SF and LA and moved to Portland a few years back. Portland can't offer the diversity, culture, art, cuisine, etc. that those cities can, but it really is a fantastic city for its size.
I have only one local client so I can't speak to the job scene, but my friends seem to be doing well, though they are mostly in their late 30's and early 40's, if that means anything.
There's just a good feeling here and the people are overall the friendliest I've come across.
If you're looking to invest in real estate, now is the time. Prices are going up steadily but still relatively affordable.
I've got a 3.5 yr old boy and this is the most kid-friendly place ever - so many activities for kids.

My mom just got back from there. She said it stinks. Literally. I guess they do a lot of logging and mulch-making around there which kind of smelled funky to her in the summer heat. I can't really comment cuz i've never been myself. Just wanted to share.
My brother is in Newport, OR right now. He seems to like it there.

Stinks? Where was she staying? There's logging way outside of town but no where within city limits.
